I didn't realize it was 9/11 up until they announced it today.
I remember them not telling us what happened, at ALL. Kids were leaving school left and right, teachers crying... but not a word on why anything had happened. It got to the point where I want to say over a third of our school was gone, some teachers had left, blahblahblah. And no one had a clue.
It was Laura, me, and Rachel walked back across the field that day, puzzling out what the heck was going on. We were dismissed at 3, as usual. Laura's mom came running across the field, nearly breathless when she got to us. "it's all okay. everyone's safe. Dad is fine Laura, he wasn't even there." Wasn't where? Why wouldn't things be safe?
We sat there and watched the news, um... the very super nongraphic one. She wouldn't allow any one that actually was AT the scene; she felt it was too offensive and traumatizing. I suppose it could have been, but I'd like to judge that on my own.
I felt so sheltered that day. I didn't know what was going on; had gone to the world trade center before but never knew it as anything other then the Twin Towers, so I was lost on that part too. The people leaving... I don't think anyone in EIS had lost a direct family member, but who knows? Half the people in Westfield work in the city, I think... My parents really didn't seem to care, in all honesty. They were shocked, yes, as any other human being might be. But the symbolism and the lives and everything was totally lost on them. My dad freaked out about stocks. My mom worried about letting me go into the city ever again. That's all they cared about.
It was so... weird. I wanted to talk about it, to understand. Everyone else just went around in hushed tones, little whispers that just build up the suspense and make the whole event into something it's not.
I miss people talking freely. I feel like I lost my innocence that week, when people just shut each other out, as they freaked out in themselves and lost a bit of sanity. While they closed off their hearts to new ideas, new people. The week where I heard more racist comments about anyone and anything, which, for my lovely white town, is already generally a great deal in middle school.
But we've come a long way, in my mind. Not, maybe, from a political standpoint or whatever... but friendship wise, it makes me happy to see interracial couples and friends and whatnot. Like... the couch at Magnet's senior lounge, hahaha. I'm so excited for you guys. Or just whatever, really. I dunno, this day, even though it was supposed to be gloomy and stuff... just wasn't. It's all good, for now.
oh, and AIT kids aren't half bad so far. No hot guys, sorry to let you down Paulina/Patrice, but they seem friendly enough. We'll see. I'm still not thrilled with the idea of running to AIT for two classes, but... meh. AP Physics is nice?
and... I really did miss swimming, a LOT. I never realized how much. I hadn't been swimming, actually swimming or teaching or anything like that in AGES. It feels amazing. I have my kids again. Teaching's so rewarding, even if tiring. And I'll be teaching a Pike 2 Class myself, hahaha. Trish apparently promoted me and I never knew it... probably cause I've been sorta away for a year. xP Oh, and paul would appreciate the guys I'm working with, hahaha. Every one of the lanes seems to have one; I dont remember that many in freshmen/soph year. Not an unwelcome change; they make teaching more fun, haha. I just don't like working with girls in groups, I dunno.
LOOK! NOT HORRIBLY DEPRESSING, FOR THE FIRST TIME IN uhh... A WHILE!
