"President Jacques Chirac has chosen to gamble on a firm hand to defeat the rioting across France by ordering curfews and police raids without warrants as part of an emergency package."
is it wrong that it amuses me that having just learned about the Paris Revolts of 68 in my history class, all of a sudden the French are at it again? although this time they don't have the same lofty ideals ... 2 immigrant kids get accidentally electrocuted and suddenly France explodes in fire. Who saw that one coming? France has long pretended to be an "integrated" nation, but the truth is they never really wanted the influx of immigration that occurred after the Algiers crisis and other decolonisation....the immigrants that did flow into France were never really welcomed as "French", rather, they are "Francophone", distinguished as French by their language and little else... racial rioting is unsurprising, then....but really i don't think that the majority of the rioters care about globalisation or integration, they just care about being caught up in the violence....reports are that a lot of middle class, white teenagers are involved....so how can it really be about race? thats just a convenient cover for their violent outburst....
...it's going to be interesting to see how this affects EU politics in the future....
