Mike and I went for an impromptu overnight camping trip to Lake Powell the other day. We loaded the "kids" into the truck and headed out..late.
Sunset over Canyon Lakes:
A single lane dirt road through a mountain range was interesting at night.
We reached Roosevelt Dam around 8PM, but I don't understand how to use my camera to get good night shots. But it was beautiful to see at night with the lights.
It was after 9PM before we reached the camp site. We definitely annoyed the neighboring sites setting up, cooking, and wrangling three dogs who were anxious after several hours in the truck. I didn't sleep. At all. Not one bit. It was windy as all get out and the tent just crinkled all night. Elly was restless and nervous and wouldn't lie down. I got some sleep at dawn when a neighbor turned on their generator. Shockingly the constant humming of the diesel engine lulled me to sleep.
The wind was a storm blowing in. We lucked out with partly cloudy for the morning, so we could enjoy the lake.
Bear didn't want to leave the tent much.
Mike was playing fetch with Rommel. He's a pretty good swimmer. Elly wasn't too fond of going into the water. This is about as far as she'd go.
And then Rommel knocked her off the rock she was standing on. It was absolute devastation. She was three feet from shore, but the panic on her face was priceless. She avoided the water for a while. I think her short life flashed before her eyes. She needed lots of comfort from Mike. haha.
We packed up and headed back home shortly after. With two out of three dogs soaking wet.
Bridge over Lake Powell
Roosevelt dam by day
On the drive back we noticed this one little spot of beach that would've been perfect to camp at. Secluded and personal. We stopped to check it out and let the dogs romp again. Elly only went into the water up to her belly. All three of them seemed more relaxed and played more here than they did at the other camp site. Hopefully we'll get this one next time.
We were able to appreciate the Superstition Mountain range and the Apache Trail much more during the daylight. The single lane road was still interesting, avoiding head on collisions on blind turns with no shoulder or guard rail. All part of the adventure. I took 9 million pictures.
A little perspective..it was a great drive back. Aside from the low grade virus I was fevering/aching from.
This was the prettiest valley we drove through.
The assent...this is where we came from
Aside from the raging sickness taking over my body, it was a nice mini vacation. If anyone has the time, the Apache Trail is a beautiful and interesting, if not, long drive. The Roosevelt Dam is cool to see and Lake Powell is refreshing after not seeing a large body of water since the Atlantic Ocean over a year ago. After the insanity that is the AZ summer heat goes away this fall, we plan on a whole weekend at the little beach we spotted.
