Johnny Depp Icon Tutorial

As requested by londonbeauty001 =)

How to turn this:

Into this:

Step 1. Open the image you want to us in photoshop

Duplicate background image, then go to Blending options > Screen
This will brighten it up a bit

Merge your two layers down (Ctrl+E)

Step 2. Crop to 100x100, try to keep most of the subject off to the right to make room
for the texture we'll be using

Go to Image > Adjustments > Desaturate (Shift+Ctrl+U)

It still looks a bit dark so I played around with the brightness and contrast to brighten it up a bit
Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast

Now we have this -

I like my icons to be crisp and sharp, so I went to Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen, then used
the blur tool to smooth out his skin, then sharpen again
(this will depend on the base image you're using and how sharp you want it to be)

Step 3. Open up this texture in a new document in photoshop (thank you to arisubox for the wonderful texture!)

Select all of it (Ctrl+A) and copy it (Ctrl+C)

Go back to your original image and paste it on a new layer (Ctrl+V)

Click on the eraser tool and set it to 'brush' and use this brush (or any brush you want)
to erase the parts underneath that you want to see

This is how it looks now -

Using the same colour red as used in the texture (#bb4f48) I used this brush
for
decoration in the bottom left corner and using the text tool I wrote 'Johnny' at the top
using the font 'Perpetua Tiling' MT. Of course, you can use whatever font you like and
write whatever you like

And this is what we end up with!

This is the very first tutorial I've ever written and I'm not the best at explaining things so let me know if I haven't gone into enough detail, or alternatively if I've used too much detail =p

Also, if you use this tutorial I'd really love to see what you've done so feel free to show me in a comment here!

Oh, and I probably should mention I use Photoshop, but I'm sure it can be translated for PSP and other programs.

Have fun =)
