Michael was nervous as he followed Sisky into his little house in Fox River Grove. The other guys had bounced ahead, William throwing open the door and immediately walking in and Butcher scooping up a cat and cooing to it. Mike shuffled his feet and bent down so an elderly woman could peck his cheek before she was accosting Sisky, pulling him down to her level and running her fingers through his short hair. She clicked her tongue and shook her head.
Sisky smiled and hugged the woman before turning towards Michael. “Grammy, this is Michael Guy Chislett. Michael, this is my Grammy.”
“Welcome to the family, dear.”
Michael blushed and ducked his head and the woman laughed. She patted his cheek and took his hand. “I’ll show you around. Good Lord knows Adam will be far too busy with his cats.”
Michael sent Sisky a wild look as the woman started leading him inside, but Sisky already had picked up the cat Butcher wasn’t holding and was nuzzling its fur with a huge grin on his face. Michael had no choice but to go with the woman.
“Now, through here is the kitchen. We’re making supper; it should be ready soon. Over there is the bathroom and, of course, that’s the living room. William! Feet off the table!”
“Sorry, Grammy!” William called, shifting his feet from the surface of the coffee table and flicking a button to change the channel on the TV.
Grammy continued with the tour, pulling Michael up a flight of stairs. Mike stomped up the stairs behind them and, while Grammy pulled Michael to the left, Mike immediately turned right.
“This would be my room, my son and his wife’s through there. If the bathrooms are ever full, they have the master bath. The guest room is this one. William and Mike will share it; usually, Andy bunks with Adam. You’ll have to share with Jason, I’m afraid. We’re just out of room.”
Michael had heard plenty of tales of Sisky’s older brother, the infamous Jason. He felt awkward already and had only been within Sisky’s home for maybe fifteen minutes. Everyone was already so comfortable here; Michael felt out of place, like an intruder.
“The boys’ rooms are down here. Adam painted his door blue a few years back, it’s that one there. Jason’s is this one.” Grammy knocked on a closed door and called through it, “Jason!”
There was a scurry and a clatter and then the door was swinging open. The boy who swung open the door wasn’t much of a boy. He was tall, about the same height as Michael but perhaps an inch or so taller, with thick brown and gold hair that fell in soft curls. It was tamer than Sisky’s unmanageable “ferret” had been and fell to about his shoulders. His face was a bit scruffy and his eyes shown brightly, a mix of blue and gray. He stood relaxed in shorts with a simple black cord and pendent around his neck. He grinned, flashing amazingly white teeth.
“Hey! You must be Michael.”
“Um… Yah.”
“I’m Jason. Come on in. Welcome to my humble adobe.”
Grammy patted Michael’s back and started moving away. “You two have fun now.”
Michael cleared his throat awkwardly, raising his eyes to meet Jason’s. He couldn’t help but smile; Jason’s was infectious. Jason held his door open and motioned Michael inside.
Mike was already within, sprawled across Jason’s big bed, which took up most of the room. He glanced up. “Hey, Michael. How was the tour?”
“Informative… Grammy is very…”
“Yah, she’s great, right?”
Michael settled with just nodding.
“So, Michael… You’re from Australia, right?” Jason asked, looking completely curious in a very genuine way.
“Yep.”
“That’s awesome. I’ve always wanted to visit. Tried convincing Adam to take me when they went over before.”
Mike rolled his eyes. “He was annoying as fuck.”
Jason laughed and punched at one of Mike’s legs good-naturedly. He sat down at the end of the bed and scooted back against the wall before indicating for Michael to sit as well.
“Sorry about the bed options. We’re gonna have to share.”
Michael blushed. “It-it’s okay.”
Mike glanced up and frowned. He met Michael’s eye and smirked. Michael’s blush deepened and he laughed.
Jason blinked and looked at them. “I missing something?”
“No, not all at.” Michael assured him quickly, shaking his head. Jason nodded.
Mike rolled from the bed and stretched. “I’m gonna go get something to eat. Michael, dude, Grammy makes the best brownies.”
“So…” Jason said, rolling over to face Michael. “Tell me about Australia.”
“Well, uh… What do you want to know?”
“Anything. Just talk. You’ve got a really sexy accent, you know.”
Michael blushed brightly, but started talking, stuttering through the first few sentences.
Supper was nice, though late. Michael sat between Sisky and William and was finally able to really relax. Everything was laidback, conversation flowing easily. The only thing was, every time he looked up across the table, Jason was there, smiling at him in a way that made his heart stutter and jerk. It was after supper that was the problem. When William yawned and excused himself for bed. Mike followed him up and a few minutes later Butcher half carried Sisky upstairs. It looked like Sisky had already fallen asleep on his shoulder.
Jason gently touched Michael’s shoulder, making him jump. He looked up and met his eyes. “Hey… Ready for bed?”
“Um. Yah. Okay. Sure.”
Jason nodded and led the way upstairs, stopping in the foyer to grab Michael’s bag and lug it along. Michael felt a bit like a girl, letting him carry up his luggage for him. In Jason’s bedroom, he shifted uncomfortably, jumping when Jason shut the door with an unnaturally loud bang.
He glanced over his shoulder, his flush coming back full force when Jason stripped down to his boxer briefs. Jason, Michael instantly noticed, had an amazing body. Tight, taunt, and muscular but not overly so. It took great effort for him not to stare. Nervously, Michael stripped as well. Jason crawled into bed and held the covers up, smiling in a teasing way.
“I don’t bite, you know.”
“I-I know.”
“Come on; get in. You’re probably exhausted.”
Michael slipped between the sheets. They were cool against his skin and the bed, while big at his first impression, seemed suddenly very small. He lay back, rigid and flat. Jason chuckled and leaned across him. Michael took a sharp breath, but Jason only flipped the lamp off. Michael only allowed himself to breathe again when Jason was again lying still next to him.
He slipped into an uneasy sleep.
It might have been minutes or hours before he woke, jerking awake at the weight of an unfamiliar pressing against him. A bare arm was thrown about his waist, pulling him closer to the warm body that was flush against his back. Legs were entwined with his own and warm breath wafted against the back of Michael’s shoulder.
Jason.
Michael squeezed his eyes shut and sucked in deep breaths in an attempt to calm himself.
“Michael.”
Michael jumped at the unexpected voice. “Y-yah?”
“Quit freaking. Just sleep.”
“O-okay.”
Forcing himself to relax, Michael succumbed to slumber once more.
“Michael, you wanna go into town with me?”
Michael jumped up and away from Jason, who’d sat himself as close as possible to play Mike and Sisky in Halo. “Yes!” he exclaimed with far too much enthusiasm, rushing to William’s side. William arched an eyebrow, but didn’t say anything.
“Right, well… I lost my toothbrush. I think Gabe stole it. At any rate, I need a new one.”
“Okay.”
Michael rushed outside, following William to a car. He frowned at it.
“It’s Sisky’s. He doesn’t use it much. I think Jason uses it more than he does when he’s too lazy to fill up his own car. He swore he filled the tank yesterday, so we shouldn’t run out of gas or anything.”
“Oh.”
The ride was surprisingly silent. Most of the time, Michael and William had plenty to talk about. They just got along well together. However, the silence between them was tense and suffocating.
“You could have told us.” William finally said with a sigh. “It’s not like we’d care. I mean, come on.”
Michael frowned. “What are you talking about, William.”
“You could have told us you were gay.”
Michael’s jaw dropped. “I-I-I’m not.” He stuttered.
William gave him yah-right-I’m-supposed-to-believe-that-why look. “Why would you think we’d care? Seriously, did you think me and Gabe were just friends?”
“B-but… And…”
“Michael… Jason’s a good guy, you know.”
Michael looked at his hands and flushed. William laughed and patted his shoulder.
“Okay. I’ll leave you alone for now.”
“Thank you.”
“Any time, my brother.”
Michael rolled his eyes. Sometimes he didn’t understand William at all.
“Now… What color toothbrush should I get? I was thinking maybe blue… But then it might get mixed up with Butcher’s smurf one.”
“Yellow?” Michael suggested with a shrug.
“No. Gabe’s is yellow.”
“I thought Gabe stole your last one? That one was green.”
“Yes, but he wouldn’t use it. He’d throw it out. He doesn’t like me to ‘brush him away’. Crazy little shit, but I love him. Pink?”
“Mike’s is pink.”
“Oh, yah.”
“William?”
“Yah?”
“I think we’re out of colors.”
“Maybe I should just go with green again. But that’s so boring.”
Michael laughed.
“Hey, Michael?”
Michael looked up at Jason and fought back the butterflies that formed a tornado in his stomach.
“Yeah?”
“Wanna go for a walk?”
“Sure.”
Jason smiled that infectious smile of his, the one that Sisky had too. Only, Sisky used his smile for the powers of evil while Jason just seemed to be the type to always be smiling. He offered Michael a hand and pulled him up, helping him to shift cats from his lap.
“There’s a park not far away.” Jason said slowly. “We could go there.”
“Okay.”
The walk was done mostly in silence. Jason rested his hand on the small of Michael’s back and the weight and warmth of it seemed to sear through Michael’s thin shirt to burn his skin.
“So, what’d you and Bill talk about?”
“How do you know we talked about anything?”
“I know William. He can pick out a toothbrush by himself.”
“He didn’t want to clash.”
“William never clashes. It’s in his genetics.”
Michael looked at the ground. “We talked about you some.”
“He tell you I’m bad news?”
Michael smiled. “No… He said you were a good guy.”
Jason grinned. “Bill’s cool like that.”
Michael nodded. “Does… Does your family know?”
“That I’m gay?”
“Yah.”
“Some do. Adam does, and my mom. And Grammy. Grammy’s great.”
Michael smiled. “She’s a very sweet old lady.”
“Yah. Yours?”
Michael shook his head. “No… I’ve never told anyone before. Until William guessed.”
“So, no boyfriend out there that’ll kick my ass for kissing you?”
Michael giggled and shook his head. “No… But I might if you don’t.”
“Really?” Jason smirked.
Michael nodded, still with that air of timidity and innocence about him. The pair stopped, Jason turning towards Michael. He bent his head and gently brushed his lips against Michael’s. Michael let out a quiet sigh and melted into the kiss, his arms rising to encircle Jason’s neck.
They never did make it to the park.
