Tony loves Sarah. She’s a beautiful woman and he fell in love with her when he was twenty-eight and he falls more in love with her every day. She’s the most wonderful, perfect, understanding person he has ever met.
Craig is loud and eager and obnoxious, but God if he isn’t beautiful and wonderful and perfect in his own right. It’s terrible and wrong; Sarah’s heavy with their second child and Tony should feel guilty that he’s growing addictive to the way Craig’s body arches underneath his, the way he opens his mouth and spreads his legs and is so fucking eager.
He should feel guilty, but he doesn’t.
Sarah thinks Craig is too skinny and that it’s her solemn duty to feed him until he’s gained another ten pounds or so. He makes her laugh and giggle, her face flushing with joy. They’re beautiful together, Tony thinks, and he’s selfish and greedy enough to wish for it with all his heart.
Tony doesn’t make the offer when he has the chance and in a whirlwind of events Daisy is born and there’s a baby around the house again. Craig makes himself scarce and then disappears all together and Sarah brings the subject up now and again over the years, always wondering what happened to that poor Scottish lad that used to come around.
Tony sighs and wonders about what might have been.
