At my second job, there is a farm behind our store. When looking out our back door, I can see for what seems like miles and miles. I'm not sure exactly how far I can see, but I'm sure it's a greater distance than what most city folks can see.
I don't have any buildings, or highways, or billboards or anything like that in the way. Instead, I have green fields that stretch forever until they meet the pale blue sky. The occasional telephone pole sticks up, with wires running between it and it's best friend. The clouds add a bit of variation to an ordinary pale blue sky. But other than that, I can see the edge of this flat world we're living on.
And I daydream.
I hear soft violin music, or a trumpet solo with an entire orchestra waiting to blend in. Tons of what-ifs and if-only's roll through my mind. It's the only time in my life when I can take a deep breath through my nose, feeling my lungs expand farther than they are used to expanding, filling to their tops with air, then exhaling in a calm, relaxed "Ahhh" and I blink my eyes in nearly slow motion. The scene has not changed in over two months, but it still brings me peace, and helps me to remember that there are places better than the real world. There are places where imagination can still run wild, and not bump into walls and borders and "responsibilities". There is a place where the rainbow hits the ground, and wonder strikes the heart.
Someday we'll find it, sang Kermit...
Until then, I take a deep breath, I close my eyes for more than three seconds, and I clear my head of the toxins of the "real world". Suddenly, being barked at by customers who only want the cheapest beer to get them through their problems, my world is a little clearer than theirs. Someday we'll find it, sang my favorite frog...the rainbow connection, he crooned.
The lovers.
The dreamers.
And me.
