Canon: Tales of the Abyss
Character: Colonel Jade Curtiss
Timeline: Post-End game
Personality: Jade Curtiss is, in one word, exasperating.
At face value, Jade seems like an intelligent, upbeat older gentleman. With a smile placed carefully onto his face and a cordial attitude, he doesn't seem so bad. In fact, maybe it's someone that you might be able to get along with and you'll have a cheery, older friend that you can turn to for bits of insight that can only be found in older individuals.
His level of professionalism is high and he's very good at being able to be efficient with people, knowing when to be friendly and when to be strictly business.
But once you get to know him, that's when your patience will be tested. When he started getting close to someone, he's more prone to pick on them in that sadistically playful manner. He has a way of pressing just the right buttons to get a reaction out of someone for his own amusement or to put someone back into their place if they try to one-up him. He especially teases those that are easily flustered.
If you're a patient person, can quip with him, or don't give him any reasons to pick on you, then he won't be inclined to try to get a rise out of you. Well, often anyways. If there's a window of opportunity, he'll more than likely take it.
There are few that he doesn't really pick on, however. His younger sister Nephry, Emperor Peony Umpala, and Fon Master Ion. In actuality, Peony is the one that gets a slight rise out of Jade, however subtle it may seem to others. It's perhaps due to the respect he has for those individuals that he isn't tempted to really make fun of.
This fonist is a recognized genius. He was coined the Father of Fomicry when he was merely a child and was proficient in the fonic artes. In fact, he started delving into mixing science with fonic artes and experiment with various ideas. Some of thes+e were a little less than moral, though his morals were skewed by his logical mind. And even now, he will still think of logic and reason over what is morally right. Though now, he is well aware of what his mind says and what his heart feels. (He just tends to ignore the latter.)
Because he's so intelligent, his speech usually drips with sarcasm seeing as how he can't understand how some people think-or don't. This is another way he picks on others and sometimes his sarcasm isn't even caught onto which just astounds him further.
This man is a jerk with a heart of gold. He can be bitingly mean, but when it comes to his small circle of friends, he won't let them down. In fact, at the end of the anime, he decided to put fomicry to a different use other than replicating for selfish means. It wasn't specified as to what he'd use it for, but more than likely, it'll be for the good of humanity.
Even when he and Luke were discussing whether or not he should sacrifice himself, he admitted that on a militant level he would weight one life against many, but as a friend, he didn't want him to die.
Jade knows that he's a cold person. He realizes how much distance he has with his own feelings in regards to people. He understands how some people could be surprised when he mentions that he actually cares. One can tell that slowly, very slowly, that he's getting better and better at getting closer to others.
And when Jade cares for someone, he becomes a bit critical of them. He won't accept stupid mistakes that could potentially get them killed. If Jade ever yells at you, then that means he cares. If it means breaking his normally calm and collected demeanor to actually raise his voice and shout, then he cares.
On the flip side, only those that he cares for can get a sincere smile from him. His smiles are usually sarcastic or cordial, but there are those moments where his hardened, red eyes actually soften for those few seconds and a kinder side is seen right before he switches gears yet again.
Jade will often use his age as an excuse as well. He's the oldest in the group and will make complain about how old he is to get out of doing hard labor that he doesn't feel like doing and that he can push onto someone else. Though, he's probably more capable since he is in the military.
A word of warning when it comes to Colonel Jade Curtiss of the Malkuth Empire Third Devision. Don't. Mess. With. Him. His powers are renowned all over Auldurant. His powers are infamous throughout both Malkuth and Kimlaska. He is known as that one guy you don't want to be pit against. He won't bat a pretty lash when it comes to finishing off an opponent. He's known to be ruthless on the battlefield and a force to be reckoned with.
He is also strict in finishing his own objectives regardless of whose best interest it's in. He will use any means necessary to real his goals. In this, he can seem a bit deceitful and, again, cold-hearted. But in the end, you'd better hope that you weren't in his way.
But once you can get passed the many layers of this man and truly make a friend in him, then he's as loyal as can be.
Background: When Jade was a child, he was in an orphanage with his younger sister Nephry. His original last name was Balfour. He was described, by his sister, as a “devilish child”. He was very calculating and didn't understand basic human emotions and morals.
He would experiment on animals and beasts using the fonic artes, gathering data and results and thought nothing of it. He couldn't understand the concept of life.
When Nephry's doll broke, Jade used fomicry to replicate it. His next thought was that if the doll could be replicated, then why couldn't a life? He hadn't taken the concept of a soul into account.
Dr. Gilda Nebilim, his teacher, noticed Jade's talents as well as his troubled mentality and started to guide him away from such destructive thoughts and slowly started to change him for the better. He cared about the professor and looked up to her as a role model.
Whereas she could control the Seventh Fonon, the Fonon of sound which had the power to heal, Jade could not. Wanting to follow in her footsteps, he attempted to control the Seventh fonon and instead unleashed a terrible power which then killed his beloved professor.
That was when he, again, turned to fomicry to try to set things back to the way it was. He and his close friend Saphir (now known as dist) started working on a way to replicate a human being. As a result, he just ended up creating a monster which was locked away and later resided in Ortion Cavern.
It was then later that he was adopted into the House of Curtiss, a Malkuth military family.
When he joined the military, he would attempt fomicry on fallen soldiers which got him the title Jade the Necromancer by many. The process was slowly starting to kill him and his close friend Peony finally told him that enough was enough.
After that, Jade forbade the practice of fomicry for many reasons, ethical, technical, and moral. But his friend Saphir couldn't put it down and became obsessed with fomicry and bringing Nebilim back to life so that they could have their old lives back. He even attempted to try to persuade Jade to start up again in which he had repeatedly said no.
Eventually, Jade had established himself as a colonel for the Malkuth empire where his reputation preceded him. People knew not to mess with the fonic artist unless they wanted to meet a swift death.
