If you don't mind the grey skin or big yellow eyes (and the bags under them, but I hear her whole species is haunted by terrible nightmares, so do you blame them?), Kanaya's a lovely girl. Her eyelashes are long and her lips are full and feminine; they just happen to be black and have two vampire-like fangs protruding over them. She's slender and long-limbed, maybe even a little bit elegant. She keeps her coarse black hair in a short haircut, neatly styled with curls edging her forehead. Everything about her appearance is well-manicured, tidy, and carefully constructed. She is always prepared to meet people with her best face forward.
This neatness extends to her clothes. In keeping with her "Virgo" motif, she is well covered with long sleeve shirts and long skirts. Her standard outfit is a black shirt with the Virgo symbol in jade green on the front. She also wears a black long sleeve shirt underneath that, covering her arms completely, and a long red skirt that falls to her ankles. Finishing off the ensemble: a pair of simple black slip-on shoes. While she has other clothing (she's an accomplished seamstress) the black shirt/red skirt combo are her "work clothes" and what she is most often wearing.

This is unlike other fetch modi that usually involve something ridiculous like playing pictionary or using a ouija board or only picking from the first in a long line of items. Hers may sound inconvenient, but it's really much more practical than the kids who pull the wrong thing out all the time!
Kanaya, though it may seem odd, sometimes characterizes herself as a "lumberjack." This is probably why she's strong enough to wield a large chainsaw as her weapon of choice (also, for sculpting topiary in her garden). Well, it's actually a tube of lipstick, but it does turn into a chainsaw whenever she needs it to, so it's not much different. She has no hesitation about using such a dangerous weapon, even on delicate tasks such as cutting her friend Tavros' legs off. As lipstick, it's not quite as dangerous, but it does make her lips look great! And you should see her hedges.
She's also a talented seamstress who can quickly whip an outfit up if she has the right tools. But that's only when she has time to be concerned about fashion. She also possesses a Wardrobifier that randomly changes her outfit from a selection of several others if she has it activated, all outfits that she of course designed and made herself.

She may be the only troll on the planet who enjoys spending days in the harsh Alternian sun, as well as the bizarre hobbies of fashion design, decorating, and gardening. She loves bright colors and pretty things and makes a point of always looking her best. She even has a fondness for torrid vampire romance novels. As far as interests and hobbies go she is, more than any of her fellow trolls, remarkably similar to an average human girl!
On first meeting her, most people will see Kanaya as a friendly, calm, carefully spoken person. She certainly thinks through everything she says, often using long words or overly specific terms, along with strange metaphors or analogies. It's easy enough for her to make friends, although she is somewhat awkward with people she has never met before. She is difficult to anger or frighten, even doing absolutely horrific things with little emotion if she sees them as necessary, such as cutting her friend's legs off (as mentioned before).

Sometimes her interest in meddling will even lead her to developing bonds with downright bad sorts, though she has morals of her own and tries to encourage her trouble-making friends to be better people. For example, Kanaya is fond of the venomous Vriska Serket and does not hold her moral failings against her, but instead chastises and guides her crushfriend from the sideline. She is a bit of a shoulder angel in that regard. But her morals are sometimes compromised into inaction if she thinks acting will cut her off from the person she is helping. Her need to remain friends with others is strong enough to overcome her distaste for their actions.
It should be noted that troll society is quite unfriendly and that most trolls trade insults as easily as breath passes between them. Kanaya is no exception, despite her mothering nature and her overall calmness. She may be straight-forward and generally a good person, but she can give as good as she gets when it comes to insults and competition. She prefers to mediate between people, but if someone is being an asshole, she will be an asshole right back at them-- it's just good form where she's from. Likewise, she won't understand that someone being nasty to her doesn't want to stand around swapping barbs with her and isn't a potential friend. Future friends fight first!

History: Kanaya's history is complicated and full of jargon, so I'm going to try to keep it to the bare minimum, since most of it is only hinted at anyway. Like every player of the game SGrub, Kanaya is a paradoxical clone of herself-- meaning, she had to play the game or she wouldn't be born. But this actually changes nothing about her early childhood, so lets move on from crazy paradoxes and onto what makes her tick.
Kanaya's unique personality probably stems from her unique upbringing. Her jade green blood marked her as a troll who could be raised by a Virgin Mother Grub, which is basically what it sounds like: a Mother Grub is what gave birth to most of the troll race - just like a Queen Ant gives birth to all the ants who fill her hive - and a Virgin Mother Grub is a Mother Grub that doesn't ever have children. Instead she chose to raise Kanaya, acting as a mothering figure for the girl, whereas other trolls were raised by much less pleasant monsters. This is apparently so rare that, despite the troll race spanning back thousands and thousands of years, there's no record of it happening before. No wonder she's weird!
Together with her lusus (the term for each trolls' monster parent) she built a home out of volcanic rock and strange advanced technology dug out of ruins. She lived with technology no other troll would recognize, cultivated strange hobbies, and went to bed as the sun went down. Despite her oddities she made many friends. She became a fixture in a group of twelve trolls, a voice of calm reason and mothering practicality most of them turned to when they needed help ending disputes. One (dastardly!) Vriska Serket especially needed to be watched over and kept out of trouble. Kanaya made the mistake of falling head over heels for her.
However, she always knew these relatively peaceful times wouldn't last. Another oddity of Kanaya: her dreams allowed her to see into the future. Thanks to the visions of her dreams, Kanaya knew that once she and her friends began to play SGrub, their lusii and the rest of the planet would die. She also had the aid of a GameFAQS guide (yes, really) that was posted by one "Rose Lalonde" into a hidden paradox server out of sync with time. She idolized this Rose, thinking she must be a successful player of the game for whom everything went right. Hopefully, she thought, her session would go as well.
Unfortunately, the trolls were not that lucky. Things started going bad for Kanaya right away. Her lusus died, and more shockingly, Vriska broke her heart by kissing Tavros (the drama!!). After that point, we don't have the specifics, but their session failed miserably. They were fortunate to escape with their lives and find a place to hide in the Medium. This is where Kanaya discovered her hero Rose was not some troll from the past, but in fact a human girl who was threatening their very existence by messing up her own session of the game. Despite Kanaya's shock at this, she has begun to tentatively make friends with Rose, despite the fact she's supposed to be “trolling” her. What's going to happen now? Will they be able to change the future? Will the sphere Kanaya took out of her dead lusus help rebirth the troll race? Do we have any idea? No! No, we do not!
Roleplay Sample - Log: Everything was much easier when her friends were halfway around the world. They had met before, yes, but that was different. They weren't prepared to live together long term, stuck together for better or for worse. Of course there were benefits to having her friends in the same room, but... well.

Yes, adjusting was an agony of awkwardness. For some time she talked even slower than she did online, considering and re-considering every word she said. There were missteps where she said the wrong word or the wrong name, missteps that almost tripped her up completely. She almost lost control and left the room in a flurry of embarrassment more than once.
Slowly, the benefits began to outweigh the bad. There had been Tavros, awkard and fumbling and she couldn't blame him for anything. He'd asked if she wanted to play pretend with him and Nepeta. Nepeta let Kanaya wear her silly jacket and hat, and both of them laughed the whole time. Terezi joined in as an ironic dragon and Gamzee spontaneously wrote a song about it. It was horrible and full of vulgarities but she had laughed and smiled with the rest of them. Even Vriska -- too cool to join in, but she had watched anyway -- had laughed behind her hand, for a moment.
Maybe, Kanaya thought as she went to bed that night, maybe it wasn't so difficult.
