In preparation for Yellowstone, I picked up some of
Eagle Creek Pack-It Cube and a couple of their
compression bags (I bought a set of large, medium, and small). And, I have to say, these things are the NIFTIEST things since sliced bread.
I had picked up some generic compression bags at Bed, Bath & Beyond, and the travel ones didn't work as well. So I decided to spend the extra money and pick up these instead. And, I have to say, I'm glad I did. They are reinforced so I know they'll withstand multiple uses, and it compresses and STAYS compressed. The other bags compressed, but air would leak in because their seals weren't well made so it would expand over time.
And, the pack-it-cubes are just a really nice way to organize everything neatly.
I managed to pack in ONE BAG (28") and STILL have room
our two heavy hiking/camping jackets compressed
three days worth of clothes for myself AND kilah_hurtz (most of it which is microfiber/microweave and can be easily washed & dried for reuse)
tripod
assorted sundries
It's a really neat way to organize and pack gear. I will probably pick up more and use them for Con-packing and the ilk. I do need to pick up a scale to make sure I don't go over the allotted 50 lbs, however.
This gives me hope that I'll be able to pack relatively well for Venice, considering that we are now shopping for new luggage as our current (and very cheap) ones are dying a slow, painful death, and the last thing I want is our luggage to fall apart in Europe. They managed to last 8-10 years, all things considering (I paid maybe $80 for a set of 22" and 28" luggage pieces).
