My NaNo novel this year focused on three girls heading to Ann Arbor- two for college, and one to escape her family. Although, the Ann Arbor in the book is actually much more like the Ann Arbor I knew in 1993-5. I still miss the NAC...
Anywho. The girls are: Avery- witch/magic user/wizard, Emelyn- Kitsune (the research I did showed many different types of legends regarding the Kitsune, several contradicting others. So I borrowed some and decided that the Kitsune made up the rest to confuse people.), and Katie- Demon bait (she's the one trying to escape her family).
They came around a curve in the path and skidded to a stop. Emelyn was surrounded by four of the creatures, and was on the back of a fifth, rather large specimen. She held on for dear life as it turned this way and that attempting to dislodge her. The others were trying to grab her, but they were having some trouble coordinating their movements. Avery's stomach flipped as she saw skin being pulled off one, the others were missing bits and pieces here and there.
“What on earth?” Carl managed, his hands going to Avery's shoulders, prepared to drag her off to safety.
“Oh for the love of...” Avery huffed, “Carl go home!”
“Or help!” Katie demanded.
She had found a fallen tree branch and was wielding it like a club. The first hit made a squishy noise. The zombie turned from trying to grab Emelyn and instead grabbed the branch out of Katie's hands. Katie cried out in surprise, and grabbed her end of the branch again. A weird game of tug of war followed, ending when the zombie's arm snapped off. The hand didn't let go of the branch, but that didn't deter Katie. She proceeded to beat the zombie over the head with it's own arm.
