here As he sat across from Gibbs in the kitchen of his apartment, wearing a clean shirt and with a mug of heated blood in his hand, Tony couldn't help but wonder at how much life could change in the space of only a few hours. He also couldn't help but be impressed at how well Gibbs was taking the whole blood-sucking vampire thing, though he supposed part of that could be attributed to blood loss.
He was also impressed by how patiently Gibbs was waiting for his explanation, though that he knew could be attributed to Gibbs having witnessed Tony getting shot earlier. In fact, Tony knew Gibbs well enough to guess that the other man could probably still taste Tony's blood in his mouth, even after the coffee he'd drunk. Finally, Tony sighed and took one last gulp of the warm blood in his mug and turned to face Gibbs.
"It happened in 1863. I was a Union soldier; joined up at the beginning of the war. I'd never even been wounded until Gettysburg." He sighed. "It was a gut shot, and I was lying on the field, dying by inches and surrounded by the dead. That was when he found me, and asked me if I wanted to live."
Gibbs snorted. "And of course you said yes."
A small smile curled Tony's lips. "Of course I said yes. No one ever really wants to die, and certainly not slowly and painfully. Besides, I always felt like there was something else I was supposed to do, somewhere else I was supposed to be." He shook his head. "And I was right. I was supposed to be here."
And for the first time since he'd thought Tony was dying, Gibbs smiled. "I'm glad you are."
Tony leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes. They wouldn't say anything else about it, and neither of them would mention Gibbs's confession again, but it was nice to hear it. It warmed him almost as much as the taste of Gibbs's blood had. And it gave him hope that eventually Gibbs would be ready to love Tony the way that Tony loved Gibbs. It would just take time.
And time was something that Tony had in abundance.
