For an eternally long moment, time seemed to stand still. Kate was laughing, Tony was grinning and everything was all right again. But some sixth sense made Gibbs turn, and he caught the glint of the sun off of the barrel of a sniper rifle a split second before everything suddenly fell apart.
Before Kate could finish her joke her head snapped back, a neat hole in her forehead and blood spattering on Tony's face. No more than five seconds later Tony met with a similar fate, shocked green eyes quickly glazing in death. And Gibbs could do nothing but stare, the life's blood of two of his agents leaving a sickening taste on his lips.
It was only when McGee made his way onto the roof and shouted at the grizley sight that Gibbs was able to move. He knelt down and reached forward to close their eyes; Kate's with his left hand and Tony's with his right. He took a deep breath, pushed himself to his feet and dropped his badge on the ground between them. He would hunt Ari down and kill him in the most painful way he could possibly think of.
Then he would have two glasses of brandy, one for Kate and one for Tony. And then he would join them.
