She never saw it coming. He considers it a mercy that she felt no pain, no fear. She died with the knowledge that she had saved the life of a comrade, a friend. If one is going to die, and one inevitably will, he considers dying a hero one of the better ways to go. And he has always considered it an honor to escort them home.

She's staring in shock as he walks silently over to her, gaze flicking between her own body lying on the rooftop and Jethro Gibbs who is staring at her body in horror, her blood spattered across his face. She jumped when he laid a hand on her shoulder, eyes going almost impossibly wide when she sees him.

He knows he cuts a rather imposing figure, even without the pearly gray feathered wings extending from his back and the silvery light suspended over his head that might pass as a halo in a pinch. He smiled sadly at her, reaching over to tuck a loose strand of hair behind her ear.

"Hello, Kate. I'm sorry that I had to see you so soon."

She blinked at him for a moment before pulling herself together. She glanced back at her body once more, then met his eyes. "I'm dead?" He nodded. "You're the angel of death?"

He nodded again. "One of them, anyway. You can call me Tony, though. I'm here to take you home."

"But..." She waved her hand towards Gibbs who had been joined by a grieving Ducky and McGee.

Tony smiled again, wrapping an arm around Kate's waist. "Don't worry about them, Kate. It won't be their time for a while yet, and when it is, I'll come back for them personally." He nudged her gently, focusing her attention on Gibbs, who was staring directly at them. "And Jethro knows you're in good hands. He's seen me before."

The angel nodded at Gibbs, who nodded solemnly back before smiling sadly at Kate.

Kate leaned into the angel's side, tilting her face up to him. "I'll see them again?"

Tony grinned. "Of course. As if Jethro Gibbs would abandon you forever in the afterlife alone."

"Right." Kate squared her shoulders and took one last look at her team. "Let's go home, Tony."
