Work in progress: Star Trek movie AU

Since this has the potential to be one of the most ambitious fic-type things I've done (with the possible exception of bigbangs) I figured I'd do rather like medie is doing with her girl!Kirk bigbang (which so far is pretty much pure awesomesauce) and post bits and pieces as it's being written so I can get some constructive feedback before the whole thing's written and I have to tear it completely apart. *g*

So here's the first little bit.

Winona Kirk had absolutely no idea what she was going to do now. It seemed as though every major decision she'd made lately had turned into disaster. She had thought that Mike would be a good husband, a good step-father for Sam and Jimmy. Instead, he was an emotionally abusive asshole who drove her older son to run away and her younger son to almost completely withdraw, when he wasn't acting out and driving cars off cliffs.

She'd fixed that mistake. She'd come flying home in a rage once she'd found out, rounded up her boys and divorced the asshole with extreme prejudice, after she'd broken his nose. Then she'd made the next mistake.

She'd decided to get the boys off of Earth for a while, go somewhere with no bad memories. Tarsus IV had seemed like the perfect place; a nice, small but thriving colony where the boys could heal and the three of them could learn to be a family again.

It had worked, for a little while. Then the damned fungus had destroyed the colony's food supply, and they had started to starve. And Kodos had decided that he would have to sacrifice some to save the rest. And Jimmy had seen it.

Winona shuddered where she sat on the floor, pushing her back harder against the wall and arms tightening slightly around her sons' shoulders. All three of them would be healing from Tarsus for a long time, especially Jimmy. Her poor son had seen things that no thirteen-year-old should ever see, had barely spoken two words to anyone since they were rescued, and she had no idea what to do to help him.

Starfleet had put the survivors up on a ship while they asked questions, took statements and offered counseling services. Half of the colonists were gone, sacrificed to one man's madness. Then, once everything had been taken care of, they would be sent off to wherever it was they decided to go.

And Winona had no idea where to go, and she was almost afraid to make any choice at all, just in case they wound up somewhere even worse than Tarsus. Where poor Jimmy would see something even more horrific than mass executions.

She glanced around the large room at the other survivors, many of which were mirroring her position; seated on the floor, backs against the wall and arms around their loved ones. Starfleet could think what it would. There was no fixing this, no making it better.
