so a couple of things

1)  I went out of town!  And now I'm back!  Yay!

2)  Dude I have two fics itching at me.  Well, more like 3:
a.  in which I create a Zutara-baby Mary Sue who is either i) the Avatar or ii) imbued with Aang's powers via spirit-bending.  The only reason this second option exists is because I really really hate the idea of killing Aang off for what many will see as ship reasons (which is partially true, but the other part is well plot-related obviously).  Basic plot is that Azula's taken over the Fire Nation (and seems content to rule it alone) and Zuko is dead, Katara found out Zuko was dead while pregnant with his child (while lots of other intense crap was going on) so she gives the baby to random-old-man who is, of course, a member of the White Lotus, and so the kid grows up and has to reclaim her destiny.  Avatar redux maybe?  SHUT UP DON'T JUDGE ME.  My main love in this fic is that Zuko gets stuck as a flying lemur, for a period of time.

b.  in which Earth King/Mai* occurs pre-finale, like while Mai and Ty Lee are busting out of prison or whatever.  This segues into serious!fic where there is much couple-swapping at a peace convention-y thing a year after the finale.

c.  in which a crazy romantic comedy occurs (re: this comment) wherein the events follow the pattern of the four Avatars' wisdom for Aang.  This one will probably also include EK/Mai, but I think it will at least be a little more acceptable due to the romantic comedy nature.

Basically, I do want Mai to have someone to end up with, and the more I think about it the more the EK--with his dorky, idealistic nature--seems like a plausible choice.  It's like Zuko, but without all the baggage.  But I'm afraid people won't take my fic seriously because, no matter how I do it, I'm still hooking up MAI with THE FRICKIN' EARTH KING.

Who do I blame for this?  Jakia?  Rashaka?  Was it AkaVertigo somewhere?  STOP HIDING AND TELL ME.

*I can't help it.  I have this little scenario in my head that roughly goes like this:

Mai looked up to see him looking at her, a look at once confused, and kind, and boyish, a look that reminded her of other looks and yet was wholely different in the utter lack of bitterness behind it.  She caught her breath without knowing why; his lips quirked in a little smile, and his glasses slipped down his nose.

Mai reached out to push them back up.

***

Later, as she lay on her back under the stars, she tried to retrace her steps.  Mai was almost infinitely logical, cool, and level-headed (unless boys were involved; clue number one), but even she found it difficult to follow the trail of events that went from adjusting someone else's glasses to lying naked next to them under a blanket, under the stars.
