In 1838 Governor Liburn Boggs issued Executive Order 44, which called for the extermination of Mormons living in the State of Missouri. The Governor actually made it legal to shoot and kill Mormons or drive them out of the state. Many groups took advantage of this as a sport, burning houses, torturing men, raping women, and killing children for fun.
This year, a Mormon ran for president.
At the same time, it was legal to buy and sell Americans of African descent. In 1861 the Vice President of the Confederacy, Alexander Stephens, said in a speech that has come to be known as the Cornerstone Speech, “Slavery subordination [of negroes] to the superior race is his natural and normal condition.” As we all know, with the horrible history of groups like the KKK and Pre-Civil Rights America, for centuries Black Americans were exposed to horrendous evil - even worse than the Mormons in Missouri - and forced subjugation of one kind of another.
This year, a black man ran for (and was re-elected) president.
Whether you voted Obama, Romney, or someone else - America is a better place this year than it ever has been before. Just something to think about. :) Note: I did not write this, this was reblogged several times on a messaging board. Credit to the original writer, whoever they were.
