Jack Barakat; a lanky sixteen year old with spiky hair blared his newest Blink 182 CD in his room. He walked by his mirror and stole a few glances at himself. He blew a few kisses and continued on his way to find a semi-clean shirt. His parents were gone on their monthly getaway trip. The trip was to get as far away from Jack as possible. His older brother Joe left when he turned 17. They still talk to him and he occasionally visits but it's not like how it used to be. Jack doesn't mind though, he prefers his little sister May over Joe any day. Speaking of which, he almost forgot he had to go pick her up from their grandparents’ house in thirty minutes. He slipped into the clean shirt and rushed down the stairs and got into his Mustang. Yes, he was sixteen years old with a mustang. Thank God his father is a doctor and his mother is a nurse. He drove fast out of his driveway and into the main street, not bothering to slow down at stops. Thirty minutes later he was parked outside his grandparents’ house. He glanced over and saw a
moving truck in the driveway. New neighbors. Jack simply shrugged and knocked on his grandparents door. His grandmother opened the door and pulled him into a tight hug.
"Oh look May, your brother is here! Jack, come and great the new neighbors." Jack smiled and walked in to find a rather large man and a women sitting in his grandparents favorite couch. Jack always wondered why it’s their favorite. He thinks it's because that's probably where they both lost their virginity but he doesn't like to dwell on it too much.
"Jack, this is Mr. and Mrs. Gaskarth." Jack extended his lanky hand to the Gaskarths. They both shook it and Jack reached over to grab May's belongings.
"Oh won't you stay and I'll fix you up a snack." his grandmother suggested.
"No Grammy, I have to go and take May to her friend's house, I promised her I would. Maybe some other time Grammy?" his grandmother nodded and Jack picked up his sister in his arms. He waved goodbye to the Gaskarths' and kissed his grandparent's on their foreheads. He quickly walked out of their house and put May into the backseat.
"Jack, are you dropping me off at Suzy's?" his little sister asked from the backseat.
"Yes May-May. I'm going to go hang out with the guys and it'll bore you."
"Mkay, tell Zacky and Ry I said hello." she closed her eyes and drifted into a nap. The
driveto her friend’s house was going to take about forty-five minutes so Jack let her sleep.
___
After dropping May at Suzy's, he drove back to his own house. He wasn't going to hang out with the guys today. Seeing his grandparent's always took a toll on him. It reminded him that one day, he too was going to be that old. It frightened poor Jack to be honest. He kicked off his shoes and sprawled his lanky body on the couch, switching through channels and channels of nothing. He flung the control over to the other couch and decided he'd nap for a bit. Suzy's mom will drop May off.
___
Jack awoke to the sound of the doorbell outside ringing over and over again. He huffed loudly and walked over to the door, wiping away the remnants of sleep that graced his face. He peaked through the peephole and saw Suzy's moms face. He opened the door and in jumped May, her bouncy little self-knocked Jack a little bit off
balance.
"Hey little May." He wiped his hand on top of her hair. She whined a little but giggled at Jack's silly attempt to be adorable.
"Thank you Ms. Louise. I'm sorry I didn't come and pick her up."
"No problem Jack. May told me you were busy with your friends so I thought we wouldn't bother you at all. I hope it isn't too late that I brought her.” Jack glanced down at his watch and noticed it was 5:30.
"Uh yikes, I guess I was too caught up hanging out with my friends, I didn't realize it was late.” Ms. Louise simply nodded and waved a goodbye to May and Jack. Jack closed the door behind Ms. Louise and turned around to see his sister bouncing on the couches.
"May Leah Barakat, get down from those couches!" He reached over and grabbed his sister, who simply giggled uncontrollably. Jack took her all the way into the kitchen and sat her on the kitchen counter. She watched him pull out the Mac-N-Cheese and start boiling the water up. He dropped in the macaroni and watched it as it splashed into the water. Mac-N-Cheese was probably one of Jack's favorite dishes- only because it was simply to make and fun to eat. Jack was your definite kid at heart.
Twenty minutes passed and he served the food and watched as his sister ate it up. He finished his own dish and carried May to her bedroom. He waited on her bed as she got into her pajamas in the bathroom. She came out quickly and jumped onto Jack's lap.
"Oof. May-May, you're getting heavy." In all honesty, Jack would still let her sit on his lap even when she turned thirty.
"Read me a bedtime story Jackie!"
"Okay, okay. Pass me that book." The book contained all the typical fairy tales. Total bullshit in Jack's eyes, but that's what his sister likes. He tucked his sister into bed and started to read Cinderella for the thousandth time. She soon drifted into a deep sleep and Jack gently got off her bed and went back into his room. School was tomorrow and he defiantly couldn't miss it.
****
It was Monday morning and Jack was slipping into his shoes and trying to prepare breakfast at the same time.
"May, get your butt down here!" he called out to his sister who was still taking her time upstairs. He heard her small feet rush down the stairs and grab her lunch. She sat at the table and ate her cereal. Jack peeled a banana and scoffed it all down.
"Come on, two minutes!" his sister swallowed as fast as she could and grabbed her bag. Jack grabbed his and slung it around one shoulder while picking up his sister with the other. He locked the door and ran over to the neighbors. Once Mrs. Fawn opened the door, he kissed his sister on her forehead, thanked Mrs. Fawn and ran back to his car. He sped off to school because he was currently running late for his big day. Not even Jack Barakat wanted to ditch school today.
___
He arrived at school with two minutes to spare. He dashed through the halls and made it into first period. His English teacher glared at him and Jack simply shrugged it off. He was used to the glares his teachers give him. He sat in the back of the class next to his best friends Zack Merrick and Rian Dawson. Class soon began and Jack pushed in his ear buds and drifted into a nice sleep. He was never a morning person.
After first period ended, and third period dragged on, soon fifth period was here and Jack couldn't even bear to wait for lunch. As soon as the third bell rang, Jack bolted to the cafeteria where his friends were already waiting. He purchased his lunch but Jack wasn't going to eat it. On the contrary, Jack had just started his mischievous plan. Jack jumped onto the lunch table and yelled 'food fight' which commenced the annual food fight tradition. Mashed potatoes, all kinds of vegetables and mystery meat flung across the cafeteria. Jack Barakat was honestly glad he didn't have to eat that grotesque meat. And God only knows what the hell is in there.
As Jack reached for his mashed potatoes, he didn't notice the principal enter the cafeteria and was now staring at him. Jack flung his mashed potatoes right at the principal’s face.
"Shit." Jack said as the remains of his mashed potatoes fell out his hand and the entire cafeteria went silent. Mr. Coleman, the principal, merely wiped the food off and walked over to Jack.
"Y-you look good Mr. Coleman. I like the new tie, it suits you. How's the wife?"
"Barakat!" roared Mr. Coleman at the top of his lungs, causing the utensils to shake at the table Jack was still standing on. Mr. Coleman pointed to the door and Jack already knew where to go. He was just in there last week for putting a whoopee cushion on the English teacher's chair.
