you'd think that people would've had enough (of silly love songs).
Most mornings Chuck wakes up, Nate is on his couch.

The girls get all the attention, because everyone loves a pair of pretty girls who love each other.
The truth of the matter is the boys love each other just as much. Chuck would just prefer everyone not to know it.
-
They are in high school and the world is theirs - that is what Chuck believes in.
The day is bright and sunny and he is smoking excellent weed in the park with his best friend.
Nathaniel's lips close over the join and Chuck looks away.
"Hey, man - this is truly fantastic shit."
Chuck smirks and Nate smiles, ever the sweeter one.
"Only the best for me and you, Nathaniel."
The words roll off his tongue too easily, leaving behind a saccharine taste and Chuck takes another hit to get rid of it.

So his dad doesn't love him.
So what?
Other people do.
(He hopes, at least.)
-
There was a dream - once.
Chuck woke up to Nate on his couch. It was early on a weekend and he was just in boxers. Chuck walked over to wake him up and Nate smiled a slow, easy smile at him before sitting there with his mouth slightly puckered and Chuck leans in just as slow and easily because that is a kiss me face if he's ever seen one. Nate tastes like weed and chocolate milk and Chapstick. Someone makes a noise, something stuck in between a moan and a groan, and Chuck's fingers curl into Nate's impossibly long hair.
When he wakes up, Nate is sleeping on the couch.

If Blair is a Queen then he is a joker, Nate is the King and Serena an Ace.
Erik would be a Jack if he counted, but he doesn't really. Not now, at least.
Chuck decided the poor kid deserved a few years before it all started.
The King rules the Queen and is only trumped by the Ace - the Joker watches helpless from the sidelines because he is not a real card at all.
-
Blair wasn't always his siren song.
There were always times when he'd noticed the swell of her breasts under a starched white blouse and the expanse of her lips over the top of a water bottle. But back then it was more sheer appreciation, a quick glimpse for pleasure's sake and brief dirty thoughts, before he retreated back into a cloud of smoke and video games and dirty maids.
He loved Nate and he was a friend to Blair and that was all he knew. Serena was a lost cause.

"What're we doing tonight, Chuck?"
For a second, Chuck is eight and watching cartoons in the morning. Talking mice, if he remembers correctly. Nate slept over the night before and Bart was gone.
He's still hungover from last night and he thinks he might've pulled a hamstring doing the horizontal tango with Cindy the Concierge.
"Taking over the world, Nathaniel."
His laugh surprises him most of all, a high pitched nervous noise that he washes down with another mimosa and cigarette.

The night after they take over the world, Chuck wakes up on the couch with Nate.
