i've got a war in my mind - carter/serena (hints of dan/serena, future!fic). pg.
Serena is 29 when life comes crashing down all around her again. She doesn't want to cry, she is tired of feeling weak, but she knows that the tears are about to spill from her eyes. She should've known that it wasn't going to last. Because Serena is the girl that everyone notices, all the boys falling instantly for her, but Blair Waldorf is unforgettable.
Dan doesn't look at her the whole time he's packing his stuff. "We are done, Serena, I can't live this lie anymore," he had said, "You deserve to be someone's first choice." The message he left unspoken runs through her mind. You're my second choice, you're not the one I love the most... She already knew this, but it hurts to hear it.
"Who the hell is he to not want you?" echoes in her head while she lies in bed trying to sleep. She sighs, knowing that she won't sleep that night.
It's been three weeks and she's tired of feeling alone (of being alone, hearing words running around her mind and driving her crazy), so she bites her lower lips and swallows all her doubs. The phone rings twice before he answers, "Serena?" he answers and her heart flutters because his voice is the same as before, that voice that used to whisper in her ear after kissing her neck sweetly. "I need your help," she says, "I can't stand being trapped here anymore." He doesn't hesitate, he never does, "Pack your things, baby," and then he hangs up. She laughs, it's a bubbly laugh that she almost has forgotten because she never uses it anymore.
It's been three years since that day. She takes Carter's hand and smiles at him, he brings her hand to his mouth and kisses it. "You know," she says, "We've been on the road for a really long time and I know it's hard for you to keep up with your job, so I w -" he interrumpts her. "Serena, there's not a chance in hell that I'm letting you go." She laughs, "Actually, I was going to suggest to settle down and, maybe, making this a little more... permanent?" she says brightly. "Well, if you really want to put a ring on it," he jokes, she hits him in the shoulder but she's smiling too. "That's not what I meant and you know it!" The song in the radio changes and then, "Maybe I did mean it."
