whispers - carter/jenny. (minor nate/serena, nate/jenny, carter/serena, dan/serena). pg.

There's something about watching the person you love being unhappy in another arms, Carter thinks. Serena is as beautiful as she was before, her hair is still shinning gold cascading down her back and her lips are still the same lips he used to kiss, but -
(Oh, how he hates that word,)
- her eyes are not the same. Her blue eyes are not alive, and he feels like dying because he knows it's all Daniel Humphrey's fault.

There's something about watching Nate endlessly pinning for Serena while Serena dies a little everyday in Dan's arms, Jenny knows. It's exhausting, dealing with everyone's mistakes, and having to watch the sadness in Nate's eyes when Serena arrives to a party with her hand in Dan's hand. Sometimes she wishes that she didn't love Nate or that Nate loved Serena a little less, but -
(Oh, here she goes again,)
- there's no time for wishes in the Upper East Side.

"Little J," he says, "I see you're still the same."
She sighs, "Carter Baizen," she responds, feeling more tired now.
"You know, Jennifer, that in another life we were each other's mistakes?" he whispers, as if he's telling a secret that nobody should ever know.
"You must have had a lot of whisky tonight, Baizen."

Truth is, at the end of the night, that Jenny decides that one mistake more won't change the lives of the people living in the UES. And then, in the middle of the sidewalk, she kisses Carter roughly before entering the cab.
"I hope we never meet again," she says and he laughs (is such a beautiful laugh, kind of childish but still haunting and alluring).
"You and I both know that it's impossible to avoid the mistakes you make," he retorts before closing the door for her.

They spend years like that, making the same mistake over and over again (but never making a bigger mistake), just laughing at their misfortune while they drink champagne at some party and kissing at the end of parties, like a goodbye kiss with a promise that they will never see each other again. They never fall in love, because their hearts are not theirs anymore (they belong to Nate, to Serena, to those broken dreams), but they decide that it's okay.
They don't need love, love is the biggest mistake.

Nate and Serena are getting married.
"Fuck this," Carter says, and then he knocks on Jenny's door.

- the end -

I'm glad you like it!
I'm just self-conscious about my writing because English is not my mother tongue.
