As I've been supposedly doing reading for my final essays due all to soon, I've musing away devising a system for categorising performers (don't ask me why, I guess these are just the things you do when you're procrastinating). So here's my little schema:
Category 1: A performer who truly moves you. Their performances are brilliant in an intangible way - they go beyond skill into that area of "something else". Examples: Barbara Cook, Judi Connelli, Patti LuPone, Lillias White, Paul Capsis (sometimes)
Category 2: An amazing performer - they have unique abilities and are among the very best at what they do. These performers have something special but, however great they are, they lack that impossible to define 'something'. Examples: Bernadette Peters, Faith Prince, Paul Capsis (sometimes)
Category 3: Great all round performers - strong in all areas.Examples: Margi DeFerranti
Category 4: Solid performer. They maybe be extremely strong in one area (eg voice) but less assured in others (eg performance)
Category 5: Proficient performer. Examples: Elaine Paige
So there's my system. It needs refining and at this stage only applies to performers you see live - but I guess it can be adapted for individual performances or art works
Oh well, back to reading :(
