Fanmix: (there was another mountain)

Jun 25, 2011 15:42

So, this mix is somewhere in between a proper fanmix and the playlist I wrote to for On the other side of every mountain. Meaning that I used it mostly for inspiration while writing, but the mix says things that couldn't quite make it into the story, especially secondary characters' perspectives.

The title for both the fic and the fanmix come from a statement about the conditions in Korea by Lieutenant Colonel George Russell:

"On the other side of every mountain [was] another mountain."

Unfortunately, that also seems to work as an analogy for war & wars in general.

A large part of the mix (and the story, to a lesser extent) was inspired by my grandfather, who fought in the Korean War, family members who are currently serving in the US Army and Navy, and the veteran's clinic in SF I walk by every day on the way to work. If you're interested in learning more about the US's "Forgotten War", there's a wonderfully informative collection of veteran's memoirs online here.

Suicide is Painless - Manic Street Preachers
I try to find a way to make
all our little joys relate
without that ever-present hate
but now I know that it's too late, and...

Civil War - Guns N Roses
What's so civil 'bout war anyway?

Leonard McCoy
Fortunate Son - Creedence Clearwater Revival
It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no military son, son
It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate one, one

Pavel Chekov
A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall - Jason Mraz (Bob Dylan cover)
I saw ten thousand talkers whose tongues were all broken,
I saw guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children,
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, and it's a hard,
It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

Universal Soldier - Donovan
And he's fighting for Canada,
he's fighting for France,
he's fighting for the USA
and he's fighting for the Russains,
he's fihgting for Japan,
and he thinks we put an end to war this way.

War - Jonatha Brooke
Every morning I get up and I raise the flag
Salute the monument of those who gave their lives
And I guess war's ok, it's just a little inconvenient

Sixteen Military Wives - The Decemberists
Cheer them on to their rivals
Because America can
And America can't say no
And America does
If America says it's so

Christopher Pike
The General - Dispatch
All the men held tall with their chests in the air
With courage in their blood and a fire in their stare
It was a gray morning and they were all wondering how they would fare
Till the old general told them to go home

The Minstrel Boy - Joe Strummer and The Mescaleros
The minstrel boy to the war has gone,
In the ranks of death you'll find him.
His father's sword he has girded on,
And his wild harp slung behind him.

Scotty
Sunday Bloody Sunday - U2
I can't believe the news today
Oh, I can't close my eyes and make it go away
How long, how long must we sing this song?
How long, how long

Hikaru Sulu
Jacob's Ladder (Not In My Name) - Chumbawamba
When we're pushing up daisies
we all look the same
In the name of the father maybe
but not in my name

Spock
Fear - OneRepublic
Wish I
Didn't know the meaning of...

I Fought in A War - Belle & Sebastian
I fought in a war, and I didn't know where it would end
It stretched before me infinitely, I couldn't really think
Of the day beyond now, keep your head down pal
There's trouble plenty in this hour, this day
I can see, hope I can see light

I Ain't Marching Anymore - Phil Ochs
Now look at all we've won with the sabre and the gun
Tell me is it worth it all

Jim Kirk
21 Guns - Green Day
Do you know what's worth fighting for
When it's not worth dying for?
...
Does the pain weigh out the pride?
And you look for a place to hide?
Did someone break your heart inside?
You're in ruins

Resist War - Chris Brown and Kate Fenner
Will you ignore
the timeless story of the name
Of what war is
and how it all turns out the same

Last to Die - Bruce Springsteen
Who'll be the last to die for a mistake
The last to die for a mistake
Whose blood will spill, whose heart will break
Who'll be the last to die

Nyota Uhura

Belief - John Mayer
What puts a hundred thousand children in the sand?
Belief can
Belief can
What puts a folded flag inside his mother's hands?
Belief can
Belief can
