Psych 6.01 & 6.02

Two episodes in and this season of Pysch is amazing. It's already matched the number of episodes I enjoyed last season.

6.01
I was so afraid that Lassiter finding out about Shawn and Juliet would be about Lassiter trying to get back at Shawn, rather than about his and Juliet's relationship, so I was very pleased and excited that they concentrated on Lassiter's hurt feelings rather any form of revenge - after all, he didn't want to get Juliet fired, or even get Shawn fired, he just wanted everyone to know he was upset at being lied to. I adored the final scene where Lassiter told Shawn that if he hurt Juliet, he was going to get shot, repeatedly. Lassiter and Juliet's friendship is one of the best things about the show to me, so I was very happy with the way the story played out.

The rest of the episode was much sharper than it has been in a couple of years. Shawn actually did some detecting, Malcolm McDowell's presence didn't overshadow any of the other characters. Henry and Vick both had stuff to do and fulfilled the roles that they're meant for. It made me laugh a lot, which again, is something Psych had been struggling with. The scene with Shawn hooked up to the lie detector is brilliant and even though I'd seen it at Comic Con, the part where Gus switches out his police badge for his sales badge made me giggle. Everyone was likable and their reactions to events made sense. Shawn is annoying but in that endearing way, rather than the way that makes you want to slap him. This Shawn is one I can see Juliet falling for. And it's nice to see she's still exasperated by him. Who wouldn't be?

Favourite parts: All the lie detector scenes, especially the last.

6.02
After a great start I was hoping and praying the second episode would continue in the same way. Truth be told, it surpassed my expectations. I haven't actually seen The Hangover, but I know enough about it to get what they were sending up. You obviously don't need to see The Hangover to enjoy the episode though or to find it hilarious, which it was. Everyone was competent and incompetent in turn. Lassiter and Shawn trying to maintain some semblance of sanity while both very obviously unsettled by what might have happened - Lassiter because he might have lost control and killed someone; Shawn because he can't remember anything. I enjoyed the group working together, (as Shawn said, they are some of the greatest detective minds) and still squabbling. The scene in Vick's office where they're hitting each other with towels was great.

Juliet proves once again that she is the best woman on TV by telling Shawn she's happy not to live with him if he doesn't want to. No needy, whiny, please love me crap from her, no she's fine and as long as they're fine, that's all that matters. Which is as healthy as you can get in a relationship with Shawn, I'm sure. She wouldn't want to live in a dry cleaner's anyway. But I think it's good that they're progressing the relationship without overpowering the story.

Favourite parts: The video of Lassiter shooting the doughnut, both scenes in the morgue, jumping in the pool to escape the expolsion, Gus being high as a kite while a full gun battle raged around him.
