“Penny?”
Penny rolled her shoulders and strained to reach the packet of marshmallows on the top shelf.
“Penny?”
“How did they get up there in the first place?” she muttered to herself, staring up at the packet with her hands on her hips.
“Penny?”
“Come in, Sheldon,” she called out and then put her knee on the counter and started to push herself up.
“What are you doing?” Sheldon asked from the doorway. Penny could practically hear his mind trying to work it out.
“Trying to reach the marshmallows,” she said, finally plucking them from their spot. “See?”
She jumped down from the counter, while Sheldon shuffled across the room to join her in the kitchen. She watched him take in the gallon of ice-cream, almonds, chocolate and now marshmallows spread across every surface.
“But what are you doing with them?”
Penny smiled and pulled open the ice-cream. “Making Rocky Road. Hand me that bowl.”
Sheldon looked around, then settled on a suitable looking mixing bowl and passed it to her. “Rocky Road ice-cream?”
“Uh huh.” Penny started to scoop out the ice-cream into the bowl.
Sheldon, to Penny’s considerable surprise, managed to stay silent for almost twenty seconds.
“You can buy that ready made, you know.”
Penny grinned widely and tossed him a bag of almonds. “It tastes better when you make it yourself. Open those and put them in with the ice-cream.”
Sheldon did as he was told, watching as Penny started to break up the chocolate.
“Did you get dumped again? Is this a break-up ritual? Is that why you’re still in your pajamas?”
Penny looked down at herself and sighed. “No, Sheldon. I didn’t get dumped. I’m not depressed. I just want to make some Rocky Road and since you’re here...” She stopped and looked up at him finally. “Why are you here?”
Sheldon smiled, picked up a spoon and started to mix the ice-cream and almonds together, while Penny threw in alternate handfuls of marshmallows and chocolate chunks.
“As part of the roommate agreement, Leonard is allowed six nights a year in the apartment alone in order to sate his bizarre love of Babylon 5. He has designated tonight as the third of these nights and since I think Babylon 5 is wholly derivative of Deep Space Nine, itself not the greatest addition to the Star Trek series...”
“I’m sorry sweetie,” Penny interrupted, “I stopped listening right after ‘bizarre love’, but I get the gist. You want to hang out here.”
Sheldon’s face turned ever so slightly pink. “Wolowitz and Koothrappali...”
“Honey, you don’t have to try and explain Howard and Raj to me,” Penny said, grabbing the mixing bowl from him. “You want to hang out. That’s great. We can eat the ice-cream and watch a movie. It’ll be fun.”
A look flashed across Sheldon’s face. Penny wasn’t sure whether it was confusion or skepticism, so she ignored it.
“Should I be wearing pajamas?” he asked a minute later, making her laugh.
“No,” she said and pushed him towards the sofa. “You get to pick what we watch.” She grabbed two fresh spoons from the drawer and settled next to him on the sofa, with the mixing bowl between them.
“We’re just going to eat out of the bowl?”
This time Penny knew for sure what the look meant and ignored it anyway. She thrust a spoon at him and kicked her feet up into his lap. He sighed heavily, but didn’t push them away.
“You are ridiculous sometimes,” he muttered and dug out a spoonful of ice-cream.
