My mother-in-law and I have a system.
I bake all the bread in the universe when I visit, plus a huge batch of cinnamon rolls, and she gives me yarn.
...OK, it's nothing so formal as a system, but we do end up doing it a lot.
For my birthday this year, she gave me the Jordana Paige knitting satchel and a whole slew of little tools to go in it, plus a copy of Fitted Knits. And then, the day we left, she opened up the huge cedar chest where she keeps her yarn stash and told me to take whatever I wanted, enough to make a sweater out of. Y'all, she's been knitting more than 50 years and has the most well-kept, gorgeous yarns. Her stash lives in a massive cedar chest -- you could fit three people in the thing, easy, and it's absolutely full (and even halfway organized, which boggles the mind).
I tumbled out of the chest with many balls of Kid-N-Ewe, which was discontinued a few years ago, in color 510. Last night, I cast on for a cardigan. Yay!
