I signed on to the internet this morning, (at least 50%) intending to order Michael J. Mahoney's book "Constructive Psychotherapy." The most recent email in my inbox was a notice that two days ago Dr. Mahoney committed suicide. This is particularly upsetting because I was quite inspired by a brief summary of his approach included in the book "Ambivalence in Psychotherapy." It seems that he emphasized directing a great deal of empathy at people's resistance, their reasons for not wanting to change or even for needing not to change. The humaneness of this stance is clear, as is its strategic value.
Poor guy.
