My life nowadays can be summed up in three points: 1) Working 15 hours a week at the comics shop, which is full of both comics and kitties and is therefore pretty awesome. 2) Working 20 hours a week as an intern at local university’s science libraries, which are full of science and neat things to do and are therefore pretty awesome. 3) Taking a full courseload, which vacillates between dull and pretty awesome, except for web design which is entirely awesome. I kind of want to fire up my Neopets account again and try out my mad skills on a pet page So I don’t actually have any free time at all, but I’m pretty okay with that right now.
As for today, well, I think this bus does loop around to go in the right direction (spoilers: it did, eventually), but I don’t really care if it doesn’t because I’m not fucking moving. SO LET’S TALK ABOUT ALL THE COMICS I’VE BEEN READING.
Starman: I love this comic so, so much. I finally finished it, and Jack is such a wonderfully realized hero and his relationships with his family are so incredibly written and I love everything about it (okay, even if the plot went a little weird in the last third or so). And the Shade is way up there on the list of comic characters I’d hit. Someday I’ll write that Jack/Shade rattling around in my head
Scott Pilgrim: So I’m a little late-there was a slow day at work and I marathoned the whole thing. Lots of fun, with really entertaining characters. Also lesbian makeouts. Although not being able to tell half the characters apart didn’t really help (one of the reasons I don’t read much manga-I am visually stupid! I need bright colors!).
The Unwritten #17: This book is so damn cool. This issue tells the backstory of one character as a choose-your-own-adventure, which fits her perfectly. The readers can be as cynical or optimistic as they want in deciding what happened, and since many of the paths leave to the same ending, they can adopt that as their own canon. In sum, awesome.
Batgirl: WHY HAVE I NOT BEEN READING THIS IT IS SO MUCH FUN. And apparently fun is really what I’m looking for in comic books nowadays (okay, Starman aside). The latest issue has Batgirl and Supergirl teaming up to hunt down 24 Draculas, which is even more awesome than it sounds.
Time Masters #4: It may be my crappy mood, but I was completely bored by this and didn't even finish it yet. Except tiny!Rip, of course. Also SHUT THE HELL UP HAL.
Power Girl: WHY HAVE I NOT BEEN READING THIS IT IS AMAZING. I read through most of the first twelve issues, and Amanda Conner is now one of my favorite artists-her expressive faces remind me of Maguire, which is a VERY GOOD THING. Peej also gets a great characterization, and her friendship with crap-can’t-remember-her-name is lovely. More female friendships, comics, please!
Birds of Prey: Speaking of, I’ve dropped this with heavy heart. Without having read the original series, the emotional beats of the story mean nothing to me-and that’s a shame, because Gail Simone + a cast of amazing female characters should really be bringing new readers in. And ugh, Ed Benes’ art is just shameful. I am not opposed to some cheesecake (see Peej), but Benes’ constant contortion of these really tough women so that they’re sticking out their breasts and asses at every opportunity is just cringe-inducing. Was he picked solely because DC thought men wouldn’t read a book about wimmenz otherwise?
Justice League: Generation Lost #?: And back to female friendships BEA AND TORA ARE BEING ADORABLE ALL IS RIGHT WITH THE WORLD. ;v; They had better stick together and have wacky adventures and maybe make out! As for Max’s charming comment, that’s just going into my “don’t think about it” file. I need to go back and read some oldschool Max, man.
1 Month 2 Live: Started out strong, with a really interesting premise-man gets cancer and superpowers, has one month to live, and is determined to make the most of it-but it basically turned into “dying man is befriended by every superhero.”
Booster Gold #35: Ehhhn. I love that Booster and Ted’s roles are reversed now, and I love that their friendship occasionally consists of them being douches at each other but still loving each other anyway. This issue was a little too wacky for me, though. Again, could be my mood.
The Spirit #6: GUYS WHY AREN’T YOU BUYING THIS BOOK. One of the things I love about the Spirit is that he’s not at all infallible-he gets beat up, like, five times every issue, and usually gets his shirt torn or gets otherwise stripped and tied up and-what was I talking about? Anyway, he’s charming and a little goofy and usually comes out ahead in the end, much like both Eisner’s and Cooke’s takes on the Spirit. And speaking of Eisner, the Spirit Black and White co-features are a hell of a lot like Eisner’s originals: sometimes light-hearted, sometimes cynical, and always a great quick read. The writers and artists are great all around, too.
Also, the current pairing I really, really need (besides Jack/Shade) is Spirit/fem!Ebony from this book. The latest co-feature is all about her love for the Spirit! Which does not technically exist but still! And then he makes a confused Denny face at the end!
Also, Previews tells me of wonderful things like the Rucka/Cully Question TPB and Renee in two annuals and Lex Luthor teaming up with the Secret Six and the Larfleeze Christmas Special. I WANT IT ALL
