I like Christmas and everything, but the end of the year always puts me in a terrible mood. Not only is there the stupid internal pressure to sum up one's year (something I am loathe to do, this year in particular), but suddenly every publication and website I frequent is beset with BEST OF 2007!!! lists, which means I have to hear more shit about Arcade fucking Fire. Well, except from
WFMU (hopefully).
Lately I've been going through a new music phase at the moment. I find that I have three modes when it comes to music:
1. Cruise Control - wherein I listen to the same old shit. I only buy cds by bands I already know I like, or are already within my direct sphere of musical interest.
2. Obsessive Jag- This is when I feel compulsed to listen to the same artist, album or song at the exclusion of all else for an inordinate period of time. It was much more common when I was younger and either heralded the beginning of a new love (like when I listen to only The Murder Ballads for a solid month in ninth grade) or a truly weird passing trend (I mysteriously once listened to the song "Candy" by the Korean pop band H.O.T. for like two weeks straight).
3. Hunting Mode- Every few months, I suddenly feel the impulse to find new things to listen to. It's actually a weird sensation, like an itch that only the right sound can scratch, if you will permit me to mix my metaphors. In the old days, I had to be content with wandering around the headphone stations at the music store in the mall or raid my friends collections, but now I mostly just rapidly click around the WFMU recent archives page and peruse the less annoying blogs and band website link pages.
I haven't quite found what I'm looking for yet, but I do love the hunt. Maybe I'll luck out tomorrow, as I will be within WFMU's terrestrial listening area, and will have the rare and amazing pleasure of listening to Diane's Kamikaze Fun Machine in my own car!! Wowie.
That said, if anyone has any recommendations for good sounds for my ears, please feel free to share.
