Malcolm Reynolds ran a hand through his too-shaggy mop of brown hair.
He shoulda let his ma cut it last time she’d bugged him about it, but it was too late for that now.
He pushed his bangs out of his face and stared at the boy across the table.
Sean McGarvey stared back.
Neither boy spoke for at least a minute, and neither one blinked, either.
Finally, Sean leaned back and crossed his arms.
“That’s my offer. Take it or leave it.”
Mal swiped his hand across the table, collecting several miniature spaceships in his grubby hand.
“I told you before, Sean. The Firefly is off the table,” he said.
And just like that, in the tradition of children everywhere, any and all bets were off.
Sean had pushed too far. He and Mal would stay friends for years, but Sean never would get his hands on that Firefly.
The toy would eventually be lost to time, but years later, when circumstances were different, another man would try to make a deal with Malcolm Reynolds for a Firefly.
That man would get the same response.
Come hell or high water, for Mal Reynolds, the Firefly was off the table.
