I did, in fact, guess early on that it was Sam -- mostly because "It would be sooo great if this was Sam, I hope it is!!" And it was.

Okay, I feel pretty absurd now . . . I had to re-read it to realize that yes, it is ambiguous. It can be any member of the team who would regard Cassie as a niece. My mind probably jumped to Sam because I so wanted it to be her -- largely because it inverts the trope so nicely.

Much like beauty is in the eye of the beholder, sometimes the story is in the eye of the reader. This is one of those times.
And, um, though I said I wasn't saying, I did choose my icon for my response to your comment on purpose...and I have been known to slightly ship Jack/Janet, so those two being siblings doesn't fit quite as well as another member of SG-1...just saying...
