So, I didn't do NaNoWriMo this year. Instead, I tried my hand at
picowrimo, a community where you set your own writing goals for the month. And it finally happened. I actually failed at a writing goal. That's new to me. I am one of those people who nearly always finishes what I say I will do. But frankly, that's if I have a goal imposed upon me by someone other than me. Goals I make for myself? Forget it. I change them to suit my whims and rarely actually do them. (I meant to do laundry today, honest!)
That said, I didn't do too badly with pico. My goal was to write 100 words five days a week (every weekday). I had to throw out the weekends because of my work schedule. Frankly, I knew this was really pushing it and that I needed to throw Fridays out, too, but I thought I could manage (I work overnights on Fri/Sat/Sun right now and with sleeping during the day, it gets quite difficult to do much else). Now, you guys know I write short fic, so that goal quickly changed into "a fic a day," which is why I picked such a paltry number to begin with. Drabbles for everyone! I've done that before, and I thought I could do it again.
But I forgot one thing. When I moved house this month, I didn't have internet, or even a computer, for several days. Yeah, that kind of makes it hard to write and post fic for me, as whenever I hand write things they sit around for years and eventually get lost, and because, well, I was damn tired from the hard work of the actual move. When the day was done, so was I!
And so while I tried, I feel Master Yoda would correct me and simply say I did not achieve my goal of writing every day and I certainly did not manage a fic a day.
However, I'm okay with that, because the "fic a day" thing wasn't necessarily part of my original goal but a modification that came later, and overall I came pretty close to winning, so to speak.
In November, I wrote every weekday except for the past three (yes, even during the move). I posted 14 fics and wrote 3 blogs (two of which I was paid for). I also made two wallpapers for
December Lady's advent calendar (why do you think I didn't write for the past three days, hm?). If you add that up, that's 19 pieces of creativity this month. There were only 22 weekdays this month. So I'm only three short. That doesn't seem too bad - especially since Fridays were a pipe dream anyway. Now, granted, it's possible I'll bust out three fics tonight and make this a moot entry, but I doubt it. My dog and I have agility class soon and I'm hungry and even if I do I was only going to count fics originally, so counting blogs and art isn't quite kosher, I suppose. But seriously, I'm okay with sharing my fun time with creative pursuits other than writing fic. I just want to get excited and make things, as Wil Wheaton would say, more days than not, so this month seems like a win. Oh! And managed to buy a house and move all of my belongings, a husband, myself, three dogs, three cats, and three fish (yes, only three) into it, and somehow keep most of my sanity, so that is definitely a win.
It feels funny for me to not meet a writing goal, but when I look at it like that, I do believe I'll live.
Especially if you consider word count, which was to be at least 2200, and is 7577. I'll take it. Besides, I've never been a "write every day" writer, but I am usually a "write most days" writer. I had gotten out of the habit of that, and this has made me come back to it, so that's good enough for me. Besides, we all know I can do NaNo when I want to... *grin*
