Patrick's finger hovered over the mouse, hesitating.
He'd thought a lot about this, and he thought he was ready, but now that the moment of truth had arrived, he wasn't sure.
There were so many variables. Between the flight, the activities (yes, there were activities - but not so many as to overwhelm David), and most of all the lodging, it had been a lot of work to get to this point.
But here he was, ready to pull the trigger (well, to push the button) on the first major vacation he would take with David.
So he was nervous.
He took a deep breath, held it, and closed his eyes for a moment.
Then opened them, let out his breath, and clicked the mouse.
And just like that, it was done.
Six months later, David was beaming at him.
"Oh, it's perfect!"
"Is that sarcasm?"
David shook his head.
"Actually, no."
Patrick exhaled in relief.
"I was worried it might hit a little too close to home."
David chuckled. "Well, it does, but..."
"But?"
"But that's okay. Better than okay. I love it."
Patrick pressed his lips together and looked down, blushing.
"I was hoping you would. But people said I was crazy."
"Well, people also say you can't go home again, and that's clearly wrong, so..."
Patrick smiled.
So did David, even wider than before.
Then they claimed their room.
Their vacation was filled with fancy restaurants, curated activities, and beautiful sights.
But if you'd asked them what their favorite part was, they'd have had no trouble answering.
It was the evenings spent at the little roadside inn Patrick had found nestled off the beaten path and away from all the fancy resort hotels.
Because David was right. The saying was indeed wrong.
Apparently, you can go home again.
