Yeah... . Also Mike Chang. Potatoes. The pronouns are tricky so more apologies. I think this chapter predicted the future.

Warning: Character Death since it is a major plot point.

Part 3

Matt, who had gotten tired of waiting, was already up on the risers. He raised his eyebrow at her, a concerned expression. Rachel sat in the chair in front of Mike’s best friend, then turned around to give him what she thought was a reassuring smile. She was about to speak when Mr. Schuester came in.

“Hey people. Have I got something for you. Is there only eleven of us today?” He shrugged it off, not wanting anything to get in the way of his big news. “Anyway,” Mr. Schuester was truly excited about something, and it reflected in his hair. “I Love the 80s was on VH1 last night. It made me remember how great that decade was.” Again, Mr. Schuester was very animated in explaining his thought process, actually flailing his hands about. “So we’re gonna do an 80s medley. That’s like five mash ups! I call it “Jenny say, “Come Take Me On Eileen Ain’t Nobody Else Just Like Heaven.”

Mr. Schuester kept his hand up, expectantly. Artie looked around the choir room, before giving the New Directions faculty director the high five he had been waiting for.

“Right guys, we’re going to mix it up a bit.” He passed out the sheet music. “Tina you can take “Come On Eileen” and Santana…” His dramatic pause and cheesy grin was probably accompanied by the drum roll in his head. “Just Like Heaven.” Brittany started clapping for her “friend’s” first solo.

Rachel stood up. “Mister Schuester. I strongly disagree with the vocalist you’ve chosen to sing Just Like Heaven.”

Everyone was looking at her curiously, even Brad. “Uh… Sorry, Mike. It’s just that when I think about the lyrics, something about them just screams Santana. But if you feel that strongly about having a solo, let’s see how you do on 8675309.”

Hearing Mike’s name in place of her own made Rachel realize why she was getting the weird stares. She quickly took “her” hands off Mike’s hips. “Well, ok Mr. Schuester. I could give it a try.” She gave what she thought was a very Mike grin.

“Alright. Artie and Mercedes will sing, “Take On Me” and “Ain’t Nobody” respectively. Let’s take it from the top.”

The McKinley Jazz Ensemble started out with the Dexy's Midnight Runner’s version but at Mr. Schuester’s signal they kicked it into the Save Ferris cover. It was hard to resist the brass instruments, so of course Matt and Brittany started dancing. Quinn grabbed Rachel’s hand and pulled her off of the risers. Everyone looked to her expectantly, waiting for “The Changster” to do his magic.

“Uh…” Rachel just wind milled her arms around and hoped she didn’t make it look like Mike was drowning. It’s not that she didn’t know how to dance, far from it. She was in Ballet Club after all. Hip-hop or krunk just wasn’t her thing. Eventually, she just let the music dictate her movements, but Rachel still felt awkward.

No one said anything as they transitioned into the next song.

“Show me, show me, show me how you do that trick, the one that makes me scream,” she said. “The one that makes me laugh,” she said.” Santana sang and gave a wink to Brittany.

More awkward dancing from Rachel. She was pretty sure she was just flailing right now, but everyone was too busy enjoying the music to comment at the moment. She had to admit that Santana was doing a great job. The other girl’s singing was really heartfelt.

Then came the part of the song for “Mike” to sing his solo. Rachel was glad that she knew all the words to the 80s song since her father Thomas would play 80s compilation CDs when they would bake every Sunday.

“I got it! I got it! I got it! For a good time, for a good time call, ” Rachel belted out the note, surprised at how well Mike’s voice sounded.

So was everyone else. Mercedes whispered, “Damn boy,” before starting in on “Ain’t Nobody”.

Once Artie finished out the song, the other kids congratulated “Mike”. Matt threw his arms around Rachel and ruffled Mike’s hair.

“Wow, Mike. I didn’t know you had it in you.” Mr. Schuester held up his fist.

That made Rachel smirk, as she thought, “If only you knew.” She bumped fists with him. “Thanks Mr. Schue.”

“I was a little worried because your dancing was off at the beginning there. I don’t know what that was all about, but you came through in the end and blew us away.” Mr. Schuester was grinning like mad, his hair positively bristling with excitement.

After practicing their songs for Regionals for the rest of practice, Mr. Schuester cut them lose. “Great job today gang. And Mike, keep up the good work.”

As everyone else was leaving, Quinn came over to her. “You have a nice voice.”

“Thanks, Quinney.”

“What did you call me?” Quinn frowned.
