"Are the men who occupy the black hole that is the ______ power elite engaged in a religious enterprise based on an eschatological time frame and driven by supernatural longings we can't begin to fathom?"
That quote is from a recent NY Times editorial by David Brooks. The answer, apparently, isn't "Republican". Sure, they have regular meetings with the Christian Zionist movement, who lobbied against a cease-fire in Lebanon and believe that the current conflicts in the Middle East will continue and increase like "contractions of childbirth" until armageddon comes.
Apparently, though, he was thinking "Iranian". While David Brooks is usually wrong about any given thing, it unfortunately appears he's onto something here. Apparently Ahmadinejad believes he has felt "the hand of God" while speaking before world leaders, and that he should lay the foundation for the Mahdi's return. Great. We might soon have two nuclear powers lead by messianic religious nutballs.
