Six Months Later...
Ennis had never attended a Gay Pride parade before. But something made him go into the city that day. He told himself that he just wanted to satisfy his curiosity, but down inside he knew the real reason: Jack was going to be there.
Ennis had read an article in the local magazine On The Scene which mentioned some “famous adult stars” would be taking part in the parade. A handful of names were given, including Jack Twist’s. Ennis’ heart had almost stopped when he’d spotted the name of his former lover. He’d made up his mind right then to go to the parade. The fact that people from work might possibly spot him (there were to be TV news cameras covering the event) was not a concern to him. He would deal with it if and when it happened.
Now, driving down the streets of the city in search of a place to park, Ennis found himself surrounded by a multitude of flamboyance, both male and female, waving rainbow flags and holding signs and banners. They were all smiling. He immediately felt out of place in his red t-shirt and faded jeans. He wondered how on earth he would ever find Jack in this crowd.
A police officer was standing in the intersection, directing traffic. Ennis drove up to him and rolled down his window. “Any place to park ‘round here?” he asked.
“High Street,” the officer said. “Two blocks up, to your right.”
Ennis maneuvered slowly through the crowd, until he reached High Street. A huge lot took up most of the block; it was almost entirely filled. He found an empty spot and pulled in. For a moment, he simply sat there.
What the hell am I doing? he thought. What if I do see Jack - what am I gonna say to him? “Hey, Jack, remember me?” Then what?
He almost threw the car in reverse and left. But at that moment, someone tapped on the driver’s-side window, startling him. A tall guy with dark hair stood there. He was wearing jeans and a sleeveless black shirt. Sunglasses obscured his eyes from view. Ennis slowly rolled down his window.
“Are you coming or going?” the guy asked, with a smirk.
“Uh, coming, I guess,” Ennis replied. In the time it took him to undo his seatbelt and get out of the car, they guy was already halfway down the street. Ennis breathed a sigh of relief; he really wasn’t up to getting hit on (unless it was by Jack, of course).
He walked back to Main Street, still amazed at the number of people who had turned up to the event. It made him feel a little lighter inside that the gay community was so open, and had so much support. If only it were that way at the hospital where he worked.
He found a spot on which to stand, on the steps of an apartment building, and spent several minutes looking up and down the street, thinking of what he’d like to say to Jack if he saw him. Eventually, pedestrian traffic cleared on the street, and the parade began in earnest. Ennis’ heart was suddenly hammering.
Twenty minutes later, a float bearing the message: READY FREDDY FILMS came down the street. There at the very front, looking as gorgeous as ever, was Jack Twist.
Everyone went crazy. Ennis froze for a split second, then pushed through the crowd until he reached the sidewalk. He wanted to shout to Jack, but he didn’t dare. Instead, he followed the float all the way down the parade route.
His head was telling him that he was acting like a stalker, but his heart (as well as his groin) was saying, Don’t let him get away!
It seemed to take forever for the float to reach the end of Main Street. Ennis was sweating and out of breath, and more than a little irritated at the people he’d had to fight to get around. Still, nothing would keep him from Jack.
I let him go twice. I won’t be that dumb this time.
“Jack!”
Jumping down from the float, Jack turned in the direction of the shouting. His face lit up like a neon sign. “Ennis!”
They ran to one another and embraced tightly. Then, unmindful of all the people around them, Ennis captured Jack’s mouth with his own in a soul-searing kiss. The crowd erupted in cheers.
“Damn, Ennis,” Jack said, when they finally parted. “Hello to you, too.”
“I missed you,” Ennis said. “I missed you so goddamn much.”
Jack smiled. He grabbed Ennis’ hand and led him away.
Their life together began on that day. A year later, Jack moved in with Ennis and officially quit porn to try to be a mainstream actor. It wasn’t easy. As of this writing, he has gotten a handful of small roles on TV and in the movies, nothing major. But, he’s not giving up. In the meantime, he is enjoying being a “doctor’s wife.”
Ennis tried to keep his private life private at work, but eventually came out to his co-workers. Ennis deals with the little bit of backlash as best as he can. He continues to be a hard-working and well-respected doctor. He also got rid of all of his Jack Twist DVD’s: “I don’t need the fantasy any more; the reality is much better.”
