Icon Tutorial :
PSP7 / animation Shop 3 / Image heavy
Right I start off using this Image :
Patrick Wolf from
tomlab Now you wanna do all your resizing and all that jazz, When you resize make sure the width is 101, lenght does not matter, Just keep to 101 in width.
Then because this photo is quite dark,
duplicate > screen - 100
duplicate > desaturate > screen - 100 > sharpen.
like so:
-
Make a new 100x100 image and paste your image ontop position it to your liking > layers merge > all flatten.
not lost you yet I hope! - Make a new image 200x200 and paste your now merge image ontop and get your eraser [settings - size 3 / opacity - 100] slowly go around your subjects outline.
This part is always very fiddly if you haven't got a steady hand so you could always use the magic wand for a slight cheat but it wont look quite as good.
Once you have done all your erasing you should have something like this on your screen.
[if your image looks a little jagged once your done, you can always go around the edges with the soften tool size 1/opacity 100 and soften the edges a little]
New Image 200x200 [this is going to be the outline of your subject so choose a complimentary colour or whatever colour you want the end icon to be and fill] then paste your original image as a selection.
Right still with me? - Effects > 3d effects > drop shadow and use the following settings.
Selections > modify > expand > - 1
Right so for now lets put that to one side, and we can set about building a base.
I'm going to use this
texture from
_ashenicons I used the eyedropper and took a colour at random from my inital photograph and set it to lighten to get this
You can add icon brushes and Borders to achieve a desired effect but I'm going to leave mine as plain as possible to keep my chosen colour scheme. [yes I am that lazy.]
Now your base is done with you want to start thinking about your Animation,
Our animated base has 6 frames, so make 6 duplicates of your base. - make a new Image 300 in width and 30 in height, and colour fill with your chosen colour, copy and paste onto one of your duplicate bases and set to burn - 42 - then rotate 25 degrees to the right. Believe me it sounds odd yes I know.
So its something like this, then on your next base do the same again but move the pasted image up slightly each time till you have 6 duplicate bases each with a strip covering...something like this.
Open up animation shop and paste those 6 frames in order as a new animation and voila!
Paste your photo into animation shop as a new animation an duplicate the frames so you have 6 of those and then paste onto your base.
which leaves you something like this [hopefully six of those]
For artistic effect you can use either one of these brushes over the top [most animated icons do]
[you can't just paste those in cause they will stay at 100% opacity you have to open it in Psp and duplicate it set the duplicate to burn - 17 and then paste in animation shop as a new animation duplicate x 6 and paste on top of your animation]
Yes?
Hopefully your all still alive at this point, Cheer up not long to go now.
You've decided what text you want on your icon yes? Right well now is the time,
"Libertine" is written in "Berliner" font, size 18, no kerning.
make sure you have antialias on and your text is set to floating,
copy and paste your floating text as a new image.
effects > 3d effects > Inner bevel >
on these setting :
effects > 3d effects > dropshadow > opacity - 69 - blur - 4.9
new image 100x100 - fill in a darker shade then your text, then paste your text ontop as a selection - selections > modify > expand - 1.
paste into animation shop and duplicate till you have 6 frames, select all and copy > paste onto your icon.
so its something like this:
nearly done, you can of course leave it like this but I'm fussy and I like borders, so I take
and in psp make a new 100x100 and paste ontop as a new layer select the middle and remove it till I'm left with a 1px border.
again paste into animation shop as a new animation duplicate x 6 and select all copy > paste onto your icon, Icons finished! just edit your frame properties display time - 10 and your all finished.
I don't doubt for a second that I've made a million and one spelling mistakes and the entire tutorial is as confusing as hell so don't hesitate to aks if your baffled by something.
