PERSONALITY
Grell thrives on attention and drama, as can easily be seen in all of his behavior, but especially in his butler persona. He is clumsy and ineffective at his job, managing to screw up even minor tasks such as making tea or driving a carriage. He tends to blow such failures way out of proportion, attempting to commit suicide over them. However, this is usually a cry for attention, as he questions others when they don't rush to stop him. Many others consider him obnoxious and have a tendency to disregard or walk all over him. Even with this persona he displays an obsession with Sebastian, though he exercises far more self-control.
When his ruse is dropped and he reveals his true self, his personality dramatically changes. He is highly animated and flamboyant, obsessed with beauty and attractive men. He enjoys both excessive flirting and bloody murder, even at the same time. Easily excitable, he can go from cheerful indifference to childish indignance at the drop of a hat. The quickest way to make him angry is to attempt to damage his face, which is a behavior he finds highly inappropriate and practically unforgivable. With little regard for rules, he's quite good at annoying others and getting himself into trouble. He seems to ignore the fact that he is not very well-liked.
He has strong gender identity issues and makes no effort to hide this fact, frequently using female nouns and pronouns in reference to himself. Much to Sebastian's disgust, Grell also has a habit of offering to have his babies despite knowing that it is physically impossible. Though he is enamored with beauty and takes good care of himself, he dislikes thinking of himself as male. However, in the rare event that he develops feelings for a female, he is capable of taking on a male role.
ABILITIES
He possesses similar abilities as other death gods. His strength and speed are on par with that of demons, allowing him to fight and defend in situations where humans would easily be crushed. The only known way to kill a death god is with a death god's scythe. Of course, no death god would be complete without the ability to collect souls. One cut with a death god's scythe activates the cinematic record, allowing them to watch the person's memories play like a movie. Depending on what they see, they may collect the person's soul or allow them to continue living.
HISTORY
In the world of Victorian England is a web of human trials and tribulations tangled with the realm of the supernatural. Though many are unaware, sharing their world with them are demons, death gods and angels striving toward their own--sometimes sinister--goals. Demons are the devourers of souls, occasionally forming contracts with humans in order to acquire a higher quality meal. The death gods are generally neutral, reviewing lists of those who are intended to die and judging who should pass on and who should continue to live. They tend to have a dislike of demons, as they devour the souls death gods are meant to recover. Angels are obsessed with the purification of the unclean, and some are even willing to bring about a doomsday situation in order to accomplish this goal.
Grell strayed from his duties as a death god upon meeting Angelina Durless. Unable to have children of her own, she began murdering patients who came to her for abortions, believing if they did not want such a gift they didn't deserve to live. This resulted in Grell's death list being rather full, leading him to follow her and eventually introduce himself to her. He is able to sympathize with her, as he also desires to bear children but cannot. He agrees to join in on her murder spree, and the two of them become known as Jack the Ripper.
He disguised himself and took up the role of Angelina's butler, enjoying the opportunity to exercise his sadism and display his acting talents. He accompanied Sebastian, Ciel, Angelina and Lau during their investigation of the Jack the Ripper case, feigning ignorance along with his companion and employer. However, Sebastian and Ciel eventually catch on to their game and attempt to stand guard over the next victim, but fail to protect her from being slaughtered by Grell and Angelina.
