PLAYSTATION 3 SLIM

This will be part of a series of reviews concerning video games, video game consoles, movies and TV shows. Try to imagine me as a kinder, gentler version of the Angry Video Game Nerd -with apologies to James Rolfe.

Well, the cat is out of the bag. You probably heard about it on the news: Sony had officially announced a slimmer version of the Playstation 3 or PS3 for short. This is a more compact version of the Playstation 3 and is known as PS3 Slim. This console may have been under development for about two years. Sony may have tried to keep this a guarded secret.

When the Playstation 3 made its debut, there had been reports/comments being made that the console had teething problems. When Sony was quietly developing the PS3 Slim, they most likely wanted to make sure that the console did not have any teething problems. They made a point to keep the development a guarded secret because they most likely did not want to dash any video game buff’s hopes. This actually makes a lot of sense. Had the new system displayed teething problems, this would have been a disaster for Sony.

Aside from that guarded secrecy, Sony went on to have the new console marked down to the $300 level. The reason this was likely done was because most video game buffs are actually frugal and budget-minded. $500 for the original PS3 was a bit steep. Unfortunately, Sony was losing out to Microsoft’s X-Box 360, which had been marked down to placate the video game buffs. Sony may have had the PS3 Slim marked down because they were trying to be attentive to the video game buffs at large.

Aside from playing the designated video games, the new console also plays DVDs and Blue Ray and has 80MB internal capacity. Not surprisingly, many video game buffs still have wishful thoughts of what additional features that they would want in this new console. This can range from having the ability to play Playstation and Playstation 2 games and to be region code free. This means being able to play foreign Playstation and Playstation 2 games of a different region code. Again, this is wishful thinking. At this time of writing, little has been revealed about the new console.

The new console will be released in the U.S. and Canadian market by September 2009. This will be in time for the Thanksgiving Day sale and Christmas. Both Sony and the retailers will likely be holding their breaths.
