just returned from an awesome/insane weekend visiting my grandmother and aunt in charlestown, new hampshire, 2 hours north of the only real city in New Hampshire (Manchester) and right on the border of Vermont (like literally ON the border, it's two houses down, across the train tracks, and the train shakes the whole house like crazy).
my big-haired nana, with red dyed hair, is in her early seventies (i can't even name a year cuz i feel like it would put a stake in her heart). she rocks hard. she wears hot orange or hot pink lipstick with matching nail polish. she flirts like crazy with everyone. she has boyfriends in their 40s, and flirts with even younger men. she has been married three times, and kept the last name of her favorite husband (NOT my grandfather). she used to square dance. now, she's the program coordinator for the local Singles club. she's loud, bossy, sassy, funny, and drives me crazy with happiness and pain all at the same time.
anyway, i went to visit her to take care of her after her recent surgery on her sinuses. by the time i came, she was itching to go party. on friday night, we went to karaoke night at the black bear pub in springfield, vermont. this place was hilarious, i'm so glad i went. it's the only place to party on a friday night (aside from the rock n roll band at the elks lodge) so it's acceptable for folks of all ages to go and party together, which is pretty awesome but also weird. i mean, old men were calling me gorgeous, and my typical response of "oh yeah, well you disgust me" wasn't appropriate to my grandmother's party pals. after many rounds of folks singing bad country songs, they turned on dance music (at my grandmother's request) and I got down with several new hampshirites who have the most awkward rhythm (it's all in their shoulders). they would wear early 1990s mimics of the outfits we see here in the city. this one woman, dressed in a black vest (yes, as a shirt!), tapered jeans, and black keds, sang half of Cathy Dennis' " I Touch Myself" to my grandmother (she was in her late 20s/early 30s). She touched herself, and my nana smiled and told her she was naughty (!!!). there was ONE hot guy there, and it didn't take much to have his attention for the night (we actually danced to slow songs together...ha!). he was actually really hot, despite the one missing tooth and his three kids (one as old as 13! he's only in his early 30s!). i watched hot girls (NH style) dance all over really gross big beer gutted men with bad mustaches and fake timberland boots on. i got drunk halfway through the night and convinced my aunt to take me into the Howard Johnson's next door (attached!) for a BLT sandwich at like 11:30 pm before heading back into the pub for some more dancing. my nana was thrilled to have me there and we just danced the night away.
when we got home around 1:30, her dog got sprayed by a skunk right outside her back porch. the skunk piss smell, if you haven't been lucky enough to experience it, is utterly horrendous. it's gross. it makes you want to vomit. the smell stunk up her whole house, and all of us in it. we went shopping at the Fashion Bug the next day (that's their cool place!!!!) and the store clerks asked us to leave because we smelled so bad (my aunt and I took off for the car, my sassy nana refused to leave). ha. i have sinced washed all of my clothes several times, with not much luck. in fact, i can smell it right now, five days later, on my hands STILL. it crept into my house and nico's pissed that the closet stinks now too. ugh! i'm going to wash shit in baking soda and put coffee beans all over the house.
on sunday, before i took off for home, we stopped in at my uncle's house to say hello and visit with my cousin katy who had appendix surgery the day before. she was all drugged up and cute with her new black dyed hair. i also got to see my cousin scott who has just left northeastern university for the second time due to serious depression. i'm just really happy he's alive, he was feeling so bad and sick i was concerned he might hurt himself. anyway, he's back at home, feeling a little bit dejected about not being a college student after all. but he's looking for full time work and might take some evening classes further on down the road. he just needs to be at home now, taking care of himself in a safe place.
the weekend pretty much ruled. aside from the skunk and all. looking forward to my baltimore adventures this upcoming weekend and the fancy schmancy holiday party in delaware (i'll get to dress up and get drunk)!
