Earlier this evening
slapuwidafishie tweeted me a link to an EBay listing for an
RMWC scrapbook from 1911 and I happened to notice a photo of the college's old swimming pool in one of the pages from the scrapbook. I remember that when I was putting together my application for the Γ13 I had scanned a whole bunch of pages from various copies of the Helianthus and that I had a similar photo of the old swimming pool saved on my computer.
So, I uploaded a whole bunch of the scans and put them together because I have been feeling incredibly nostalgic for school, missing my friends, my professors, the shenanigans, and just being at Macon in general.
Behind the cut are scans from Helianthuses. It's incredibly image heavy, so it might take a while to load.
Swimming pool • 1912
The in-ground swimming pool was once located back where the tennis courts now are. They removed it in the 1950s in order to make room for the new gym. From the photo, it seems like you would enter on the second floor and walk down the steps on the left to enter the pool-level.
Sewing flags • 1916
The women of RMWC took up a number of causes during World War I, including sewing flags. They also raised money to adopt three French orphans and send them to a private boarding school.
Class of 1914
I'm not entirely sure when they placed the gates at the entrance of campus, but in this photo from 1914 the gates are missing. Also pictured is Buttons, the president's horse and symbol of the Even classes.
Pumpkin Parade • 1983
Pumpkin Parade is hands down my absolute favorite RMWC tradition. I can remember being pulled into Dorothy's room after the parade and doing Jello shots with her before heading down to the easter egg room for the party.
Ring Night • 1959
Honestly, I feel naked when I don't have my ring on. it's something that I will cherish forever.
RMWC Sings! • 1967
I'm still trying to track down someone with a digital copy of Randolph-Macon Sings!, an album that the members of Songshine recorded in 1967. It's so strange to listen to them actually sing Odd/Even songs and the Song of Syncopation, which we mostly shout nowadays.
Η and Γ • Class of 1967/68
we're going to sing you a song
yes, a song of syncopation
all about the school that we adore
we adore!
EVEN LIGHTS ANEW
Η • Class of 1958
there's a heaven it's true
for the red, grey, and blue
but saint pete's an even
and he won't let you through!
Η • Class of 1979
you claim to have layers
of what we're not sure,
we can tell you're full of something
of that we concur!
GAMMAS, GAMMAS. OH ODDIES, EVEN'S GOTTA GO!
Γ • Class of 1959
cheer cheer as the coffin goes by
odd spirit never will die
hitch those evens to the post
sing praise to the old odd tree
Γ • Class of 1961
gammas are tired of being proper and prim
we want to dig right in and live a life full of sin
we want a bloody mary cocktail every day before class
we might be slow at learning but at night we are fast
Γ • Class of 1981
take a little bit of ginger
take a little bit of pep
put them all together
and you've got that odd class rep-utation
Γ • Class of 1968
give a cheer, give a cheer for the girls who drink the beer
in the gam room of you don't know where
so it's guzzle guzzle guzzle as the beer goes down the muzzle
shout out your oder loud and clear
more beer!
