Here is my reaction post; WITHOUT the "Sam is my hero" kool-aid so if you're his biggest fan, you may want to pass this one up.

Hey!

I can't say what you should do. In all fairness, it was a good episode, just to me, it was a bit of a kick in the jaw that the one cool thing any fan of Dean's wanted during that whole Archangel Michael storyline, the ONLY thing some of us wanted was for Michael to take Dean as his vessel, since that was basically what they set up from the get-go. So not only don't we get that but we get Sam being the heavy in the end and from there, every season on. And on. And on. And. On.
Boring and unimaginative. So overdone it is tasteless.

No matter how many different characters the show throws it- Death, Bobby, ANOTHER Angel- it doesn't change the same old theme.

Sam wants to quit; Sam wants to die. Dean wants to fight; Dean HAS to save Sam.

There is nothing new. For 9 years; nothing new. There is no development of the two main characters. Back in seasons 1-4, the early years, when Dean was fighting to protect and save his little brother I understood it. I LOVED it. Back then, Sam was more innocent; more alive. He had compassion and belief and hope. He had more faith in Life and he would do anything to save the world. That was then, this is now. Sam is older and tired. He has gone through so much horror that faith and that hope are gone. And I understand that completely. So instead of wanting to keep fighting, he wants to quit. He wants to give it up. And yet he feels too guilty to ever be able to live a "normal" life. SO, he is ready to finally REALLY die.

But Dean can't have that. Because without Sam there is no Dean. His entire life exists because of Sam. Sam is actually Dean's Real HEART and if Sam dies, so does Dean. Now while I admire the love and loyalty he has for his brother- that is what drew me to this show- I have to say it doesn't work for me any more. These two actors are older and therefore the characters don't look like they used to. So when I look at Sam now I no longer see the brother in need of "protection". I see a Grown, mature man making his own decision. And his older brother refusing to let him grow up and be who he really is.

Sam cannot live FOR Dean. But apparently Dean can FOR Sam. And that- for me- does not give Dean the development he should have. I know he does not Want to live without his brother, but I believe Dean has more in him than that desperate fear of losing Sam which is on display, 24/7, 365 days a year and the last 8 and now 9 years in particular. And I do not get that from this characterization of him.

Now, we get to follow Sam on yet another not-quite-human adventure while Dean follows him around and emotes and frets and worries like some old woman. Well, HOT woman at least. And the writer's have decided too that Dean should make the asinine choice to do something that Sam will find out about and hate and bitch, just like last season it was Sam's turn with the whole 'didn't look for Dean while he was in Purgatory' crap, and previous issues where Sam was drinking demon blood and being a dick, and soul-less Sam the dick, and on and on and on. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

Where is this season going? I honestly can't say. I probably need to stop watching but I love Jensen. I can't make that choice for you but if you watch and this goes as far south as I think it will, we can bitch about it together. That's about all I can offer you.

Sorry. Not much help but at least I'm not drinking the 'this show rocks' kool-aid that so many seem to be enjoying.

I agree with you. I have always loved Dean for his heroic qualities. In early seasons I believed that he would do what is right no matter the cost. Every decision he made I could relate and understand. But since season 8 Dean seems like a one dimensional cardboard character. His dignity, his importance, his integrity everything I loved about him is stripped from him. He has become guilty cheerleader and comic relief. It does not help that almost all new characters are unwatchable.

IMO they have made him extremely co-dependent and pathetic. Did you see the new tweet from one of the spn writers. He says 'Deans luv 4 Sam' is what supernatural is. When I see things like this I get a feeling that I am watching a show written by 13 year old teens. This show is like most unhealthy relationship I have ever seen and I do not wish Dean's fate on even my worst enemy.

I think it will be extremely painful for me to watch Dean getting blamed by everyone again while others easily get whitewashed. As much as i love Jensen its not possible to sit and go through the torture. It would be easier to do if we forget everything Dean did his every sacrifice like some fans tend to do.

I think Dean will never get a mytharc in this show. Forget storyline he will not be allowed to be a hunter probably -judging by all the nesting Dean fans out there. I just hope that Jensen gets out of this awful show and does some project in which his talents are appreciated.

BTW is there any other good shows to watch ? I have heard good reviews about Breaking Bad. Finally we can totally bitch about spn together even if i am not watching the show.

I have never seen Breaking Bad but I should give it a go. Like you, I hear some good things and this is it's last season, I think, is this year and then it's gone. Other shows I've heard about but not seen are Downton Abbey, Sherlock (not the movies), Agents of Shield is a new show this season; they are 2 episodes in and I saw the premier. It didn't grab me like I'd hoped but I'll stick with it for a bit to see because, well, it's Joss Whedon of Firefly and Buffy and The Avengers so, he gets a pass for a slow start. For now. I can only hope the show's still around when Jensen is done with the crap-fest that is Supernatural and Mr. Ackles can land a spot there. I think the show, so far as I've seen, is missing some complex characters with good acting skills; Jensen fits that bill, and even Jared... to a point. And God knows the fans would be right there with either of them!

Another new show that is really wonderful is Sleepy Hollow; WAY better than Supernatural, by LEAPS AND BOUNDS! It's everything that Supernatural started out to be and with lots of awesome special effects. Ichabod Crane is killed during the war of 1776 while working for General George Washington to find and kill a mysterious group of people fighting on the side of the British. He cuts the mans head off and Crane is killed in the process; both die and both are resurrected, Crane by his wife who was a witch, but a good witch fighting darkness, and the Hessian Crane killed, rises but by evil wanting to destroy the world; headless he died, so headless he returns as one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and the book of Revelations is in play, the end of the world is in play! Ichabod's casting is awesome!!

Returning shows that are good: Grimm, returns October 25 -- it got a slow start but has a nice rhythm to it, and it's good and creepy.

'Deans luv 4 Sam' - *MINI-THROWUP!!!* Well, I would like to remind that writer, whoever he/she was, of an old saying, 'If you love something, let it go. If it comes back to you, it was meant to be. If not, THAT was meant to be.' Basically, when Sam gave that passionate speech to Death about him staying gone this time, I was really on Sam's side and it KILLED me that Dean, EVEN AFTER HEARING AND SEEING SAM'S FACE!!! STILL chose to drag him back and deceptively too!!! *headdesk* In that moment, I reached a point in this crazy ride that I NEVER thought I would: I hated Dean.

I have two boys, a 21 and a 16 year old. And even THEY have more maturity of mental processes than the writer's have allowed Dean and Sam. My GOD!

Ah well, I should stop watching. I really should. Now I just cross my arms over my chest and watch the rest of the Dean girls start to bail. And heck, not just Dean girls but really, they've done NO favors to Sam's character either. Seriously. He was an ass in season 5-7 and that whimpering face whenever Amelia was around- eeeeeegads.. that was embarrassing. The closeup shots made us laugh and i've never laughed AT show before. WITH show, yeah. Not at show. How awful of the show runner to do that to the guy.

Well. If it turns out that this ship rights its course and gets back on track, you'll find out here. You can always catch up on episodes online, so save yourself the insanity for now and keep your ear to the ground.

Take care!
