Distraction-free writing software- and it's FREE! (for now... check it out before October 1)
Here's a question for you aspiring poets and novelists out there. What do you struggle with the most?
I bet a good number of you said "distraction." It could be annoying sounds outside, the lure of Facebook or your word processor's formatting option.
That's perhaps this distraction-free writing program is something you might want/need. OmmWriter lets you change or remove many of the distracting parts of other writing programs. It even opens full screen so you can't see your Windows taskbar or Mac dock.
You can do away with the usual harsh white "paper" look. Choose from a watercolor blue or a blending sunset pink or another neutral color.
OmmWriter can play soft sounds and music to help you stay focused. There are seven ambience tracks to choose from. You can even customize your keyboard to make sounds that blend with the ambience in the background.
The only toolbar that appears has just six buttons and a running word count. It disappears if your mouse is still for more than five seconds.
You can download the free Dana I version, which only has 3 audio and visual settings. Or, until October 1, you can download the Dana II full version and get more audio and visual settings.
There are a few caveats to this program. It is meant for writing and writing only. So, there are few formatting options and it doesn't support printing.
Once you are finished writing, you can save your document as a .txt or PDF file. The file can also be saved as an .omm file, which will reopen in OmmWriter if you still have work to do.
The .txt files can be opened through Notepad or Microsoft Word in Windows. For Mac users, TextEdit or Word for Mac will open the .txt file. You can do your formatting and printing in those programs.

To download OmmWriter, you will need to enter a name and email address. You can choose to receive notices when a newer version of OmmWriter is available. If you don't want that, leave the option unchecked.
You will then receive an email with download instructions. Download the program and extract the file. Then follow the instructions in the email to enable the full version.
The only thing you have left to do is to customize your ambience and start writing. Have fun!
