A couple announcements: to all my Cantabrigian friends, Louisville's own mellow jazz-rock combo
Paradigm is playing the Lizard Lounge on Saturday. So if you find youself on the streets of Boston with nithing else to do, check 'em out (they were excellent at Forcastle Fest).
And to my Louisvillian friends (none of whom read this): Friday is Preview Night at
Vanguard Cinema. They've got a good idea, and they're kicking off with crazy-ass film like, uh, The Machine Girl.
Now to the actual news. I went to the state fair this morning. I have more tickets than I know what to do with, thanks to the peculiar "exhibitor ticket" deal. Why do I have exhibitor tickets? Because I'm exhibiting, of course. I entered a hat (the green one with Koch earflaps), and an afghan (the rainbow-colored one with Sierpinski centerworked hexes). So, naturally, one of my first stops was at the textiles area to check out the competition and see if results are in yet.
There's actually a great many talented artisans in this state (unsurprisingly), so it was a joy to see what other folks were up to. I quickly located the hat, which got an honorable mention. Oh well, competition is stiff, and I could say in honesty that the placing projects I saw were damn good. Getting a ribbon at all is kinda nice. But then in the afghan cabinet, I couldn't seem to find mine. It was pretty distinctive and colorful, so I couldn't imagine I was overlooking it. I couldn't even seem to find the winners in the afghan cabinet, which seemed odd. But I figured I'd wander a bit more. Maybe there was another cabinet elsewhere? I wander into another aisle, and here some textiles are hung on racks. Including some crochet afghans... the winning crochet afghans. And in the category of 'crocheted afghan (non-granny-square)' I was first place. Yay! In fairness, I think the second-place winner had better craftsmanship if less inventiveness, but I'm extremely gratified by the recognition.
So, two ribbons, one of them blue. Gets me psyched to try harder for next year.
