Caboose didn’t show Sarge his piece of home for a long time. Eight months, to be exact. But those passed by, and Caboose eventually decided that he trusted Sarge enough to show him.

They met out by the tree, the oblong object tucked neatly under Caboose’s arm. As was their habit, they didn’t say anything to each other. Instead, they turned, as one, to the cliff side. There, they climbed to the ledge where it had all started.

Caboose wasn’t the brightest crayon in the box, but he did know that Sarge wasn’t a very patient person. So without ado, he pulled the object out from under his arm and showed it to him.

It was one of those antique radio-cassette players; the ugly kind that only came in a fake brown shade, or the tarnished black. The dials and buttons had rusted, and the casing was pretty badly dented. But it was real, and it belonged to Caboose.

He explained, in his nervous, stuttering way, how he had found it in his mother’s hope chest. How she had been unsure about allowing him to have it -- but he had promised to take good care of it, and it was just so interesting, and if he ever, ever took it apart, he’d put it back just the way it was.

And he also talked about how he had taken it to school one day, for Show and Tell. And how he had walked home with it, and how the kids had come up from behind him, and before he knew it, there was the player on the ground, dented and broken.

Caboose got quiet after Sarge asked him what happened to the kids. Then he just said that they had gone to the hospital, and hadn’t been able to leave for a long time.

Sarge, not being an idiot, backed away from the subject.

There was a silence after that. It ended when Sarge tugged the player away from Caboose, and began turning it around in his hands.

Then he took off his helmet, and popped Caboose’s off as well. A kiss on the forehead followed, and everything was alright again.
