"There is no way I'm wearing that."

"Aww, c'mon. You want to impress him, right?"

"Who?"

"Don't play the idiot with us, Miss Biro. You know who."

"But I won't be able to pull it off."

"We'll see about that."

"Don't scare the poor girl, Vala. We need to convince her, not scare her off."

"But it's fun."

"Okay, I'm gonna go now. Have fun wi-"

"Oh, no you don't. You're staying right here. Sam's covering all the technical stuff-"

"Technical stuff? It's a Halloween costume. What do I need technical stuff for, Sam?"

"Voice changing."

"Voice changing?"

"Well, it's more like special effects. It'll add the resonance and reverb that's on the show, without the bulk of a traditional voice changer."

"Huh. Cool. Does anyone know what he's wearing?"

"No clue. Now stop worrying about that and start getting dressed. Janet and Teyla are going to be helping you with your hair and makeup."

"Well, that's a comfort, at least."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"Nothing, Vala. Nothing at all..."

------------

The block Halloween party was in full swing when Diane arrived at the local rec center where they had rented a large party room. All those attending had pitched in with donations of money and food, as well as decorations that went along with the theme of "Spectacular Sci-Fi Shows". Diane counted at least three Colonel Dannings, which both highly amused her and made her contemplate the far reach of over-sexed authority figures in Sci-fi shows. First it was Kirk, and now this...

Figuring she should probably be concentrating on not tripping over the way-too-high heeled boots she was wearing (At least to her; Vala had supplied them, being the closest match to the blonde's size. The pair chosen had made Diane more apprehensive than the costume itself.), Diane kept glancing down at her feet, wishing she had had the time to at least practice walking in the damn things before she came.

"There you are!" said an excited voice nearby. Diane looked up, eyes widening as she took in Vala's costume. She was wearing a very skimpy costume that Diane vaguely recognized as being one a villainess from Wormhole Extreme had worn; It was mostly pseudo-leather and elastic. "We've been waiting for ages."

"Oh, please, Vala. We've been waiting for maybe ten minutes since we called her, and it takes that long to get from home to here." Sam said. She was dressed up as a scientist from Wormhole Extreme: the Poseidon Adventure, complete with standard expedition jacket and Science Department green t-shirt. Diane smiled, amused, and Sam gave her a weird look.

"What?"

"Nothing. It's just kinda weird to see a Spectre smiling."

"Oh. Sorry. Guess I have to stay in character."

"Good work with the voice modifier, Sam." Vala said approvingly. "It sounds even better than the show. Maybe you should work for them."

Sam snorted, shaking her head. "Yeah, right. Like I'd really want to be a prop girl."

"Oh, I don't know, Sam. You'd get to play with stuff all day." Daniel said, coming up from behind Diane. He was dressed as the Tenth Doctor. With his lanky build and height, he deftly pulled off the long brown coat and pinstriped suit. Diane turned her head, the long blue-white wig she was wearing whisking across her bare shoulders. Resisting the urge to take the annoying hairpiece off, she nodded in greeting to Daniel.

"Hi, Daniel." she said, catching his attention. "How're you doing tonight?"

Daniel jumped slightly at the sound of her modified voice, making Diane hide a smile behind a hand. "Um, fine, I think. Are you John's date?" He glanced over to where John was standing, dressed as a Spectre male with a faux laser blaster hanging at his hip.

"No, I'm not." Diane said a laugh in her voice. "I'm not actually here with anyone."

"Oh. Sorry. I guess I shouldn't have assumed that just because you two matched you were here together." He paused, and then looked slightly uncomfortable. "Sorry. Um, who are you again?"

"Oh, there he is!" Vala said suddenly, taking Diane by the arm and pulling her away. Diane stumbled as she tried to regain her balance, attempting to keep upright whilst following the enthusiastic Vala through the crowd.

"God, Vala, slow down!" she complained, but Vala abruptly stopped in front of a group near the drink and snack tables.

"Have fun," Vala said with a mischievous smirk. “Don’t do anything I wouldn't."

"That brings up way too many things, you realize." Diane said, raising an eyebrow.

"I'll leave you two alone, then. Bye-bye." Vala disappeared into the crowd, leaving Diane to stand rather flabbergasted at the woman's audacity. First, she had somehow managed to get Diane to agree to wearing a costume she never would've chosen otherwise, and then she had dragged her over to where the subject of her much-denied (publicly, at least) crush was.

She stood there awkwardly for a moment, and then moved forwards, figuring she might as well get a drink whilst she was there. Then she could go find Vala and maybe chuck a shoe at her or something for making her come to this party...

After carefully filling a cup full of alcohol- and citrus-free (judging by the sign in Rodney's handwriting) punch, Diane turned back around to find herself face-to-face with him.

Oh crap. She thought, forcing herself not to flail backwards, which would've meant splashing her punch all over everything. That definitely wouldn't have been good, especially considering the fact that Diane hadn't brought extra clothes with her, and she was wearing a white-ish dress. "Um, hi." she said, forgetting herself and smiling nervously, which caused her companion to blink and then smile back at her.

"Hi," he replied. "Nice costume."

"Same to you. It's from Firefly, isn't it?"

He looked down at his long brown coat, tan pants, and white shirt. "Yeah. It's supposed to be Mal's, but I suppose I could just say that I'm a Browncoat and leave it at that."

Diane laughed softly. "How many times have you been called 'Captain Tightpants' tonight?"

He blushed slightly, color rising in his cheeks. "Well, there're more fans of Joss Whedon here tonight than I counted on, is all I'll say." he replied, shaking his head. "Most of them were women, as a matter of fact."

"Why do you think we watched the show?" Diane teased, surprising herself.”It wasn’t just for the special effects, let me assure you.”

“Ah. That makes a lot of sense now that I think about it. So, under all that make-up and stuff, who are you?’

“Diane Biro. We have an economics class together.” Diane said, stopping herself before she ran a hand through her fake hair and took it off accidentally.

“I thought your voice seemed kinda familiar. How’d you get the special effects to work?” he asked, looking interested.

“A voice changer, provided by one of my friends. D’you know Sam Carter?”

“I’ve heard of her from Shep. Does she really blow that much stuff up?”

Diane laughed. “Well, it’s more like she blows the fuses out about twice a week, but there haven’t been any major explosions in recent memory. No, wait, I take that back. There was one a few days ago, but it didn’t blow the fuses. That was just before Rodney’s bi-weekly all-night Halo3 match, so there wasn’t much drama about it. Mr. O’Neill was more concerned with the noise coming from Daniel’s and Rodney’s apartment than Sam’s experiment for once.” She said, smiling wryly.

“Wow. And here I was thinking about maybe getting an apartment there. Sounds like I’d be better off staying in the dorms.”

“I don’t know about that,” Diane said. “Not all of us are explosion-happy people, be it via gaming or experiments. For example, my flat-mate Peter and I are actually rather quiet; ask John or Rodney, they’d tell you.”

“I’m sure.” He glanced at his watch, and then rolled his eyes. “I’ve got to go. I promised my friend that I’d meet him at Roxy’s- Y’know, that new diner-burger place?- at ten. It was good talking with you, Diane.” He turned to go, and Diane paused for a moment before calling out to him.

“Wait, that’s not fair.”

He turned around, a look of confusion on his face. “What’s not fair?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.

“That you know my name and I don’t know yours.” Diane said in a rush, grinning nervously. He blinked, and then grinned.

“Oh, I didn’t realize that you- My name’s Evan. Evan Lorne.” With that, he left, Diane watching him go. She sighed, a slight grin on her face. Peter found her there a few minutes later, his Cat costume confusing and slightly unnerving those who hadn’t seen Red Dwarf. Radek had loved it, and had said so when Peter and Diane had arrived.

“Hey, Diane.” He said, giving her a lazy grin. Peter was enjoying being in character, though it was slightly disconcerting for Diane to see her flat-mate acting so far off the norm.

“Hey, Peter. Having a good time?” she asked, returning his smile with a small one of her own.

“Yeah. You?”

“It’s been good. Met a few people.” She glanced around, spotting Vala chatting with Daniel, who was attempting to discretely edge away from her, trying to look anywhere but her very apparent cleavage. Diane grinned, knowing that Janet was around here somewhere dressed as Rose, using the best approximation of the outfit Billie Piper had worn in the episode “New Earth”. Daniel had asked Janet to come with him after about two weeks of deliberation, and Teyla (who was dressed as Seven-of-Nine tonight) had finally urged him to ask her before someone else did.

“Good. I’m rather hungry; do you want to get something to eat?” Peter asked, glancing at the selection of meats, cheeses, chips, and veggies left on the tables with distaste. “Something more substantial than this stuff, I mean.”

“Sound good. What were you thinking?” Diane replied, nodding.

“Oh, I don’t know. Something quick, probably. I heard there’s a group of people going to Rosie’s soon; d’you want to join them?”

“If they’re staying in costume, sure.”

“I think they are.” Peter said, nodding vaguely. “I’ll go check with Radek, though. Stay here.”

He left, weaving his way through the crowd. Diane waited for a good ten minutes before he returned, Radek and Daniel trailing after him. “Finally.” Diane said, getting up from the chair she had been sitting in, next to the drinks table. “Took you long enough. What were you doing, taking a catnap?”

Peter chuckled, shaking his head. “No, just trying to find these two. You ready to go?”

“Yep.” Diane smoothed out her dress, and then straightened her wig out before following the three men out of the rec center and into the night.
