Daniel opened the door with his nose in a book. He made a hand-waving motion and turned around, trotting back into the living area without looking up once.
Janet and Carson stood in the doorway and exchanged a look.
“Are we supposed to follow him?” Janet whispered.
Carson raised his eyebrows and shrugged. “I guess so.”
He gave Janet a push in the small of her back, and the two of them walked down the narrow hallway to the living area.
Daniel was sprawled on the couch, surrounded by mounds of paper, with a highlighter clenched in between his teeth and his nose still deep in the same book. He seemed completely oblivious to Carson and Janet hovering awkwardly in the doorway and equally oblivious to the mess surrounding him.
Janet looked on in horror at the piles of paper, interspersed with strange Egyptian artifacts, computer chips, computer parts and a stack of physics textbooks. A small ginger cat was curled on top of a more intact computer tower, surveying the intruders disdainfully. Just the sight of it made Janet’s eyes start to water in anticipation of a full blown allergy attack.
She looked at Carson in wide-eyed disbelief and was surprised to see him grin. He tapped his nose conspiratorially and then coughed, very loudly, and convincingly enough that Janet wondered if he had an underlying bronchitis.
At the sound, Daniel startled comically, almost falling from the couch in a shower of paper. From a half-sideways position on the couch he blinked owlishly up at them through his glasses.
“Janet?”
Janet smiled sheepishly as Daniel righted himself. “Hi Daniel.”
“How did you get in here?”
“You let us in, lad,” Carson said. He exchanged a concerned look with Janet. “Did you hit your head?”
Daniel put a hand to his forehead. “I, uh, no, I don’t think so. It doesn’t feel sore.”
“Can you tell me where we are right now Daniel?” Janet asked.
“My apartment?” Daniel looked around himself in some confusion. “Yes,” he said more firmly. “My apartment.”
“That’s good, Daniel. And what day is it today?”
“Sunday. I think.”
Carson put his medical kit on the table and threw Janet a torch. “Check his pupils, Jan.”
Janet lifted Daniel’s glasses gently and swung the torch between his eyes. “Equal and reactive.”
“Jan, you can’t use that kind of short hand on your exams.”
“Right. Sorry. The pupils are of equal size and are reactive to light. Consensual reflex is intact, and there is no relative pupillary defect.”
“How big are they?”
“Ummm, four millimetres?”
“Jan.”
“Four millimetres.”
“Good. It’s a game. If you’re confident then the bastards won’t be able to trip you up as easily.”
Daniel watched the exchange between the two medicos, becoming more and more alarmed. “Am I ok?” he asked in some panic.
“Oh, sure, lad. You’re fine. Nothing that handing in your thesis won’t improve I suspect.”
“Oh. Good. That’s good.” Daniel blinked. “So why are you here again?”
“Jan has a favour to ask you,” Carson said.
“Oh. And who are you?”
Janet blushed. “Oh, Daniel I’m so sorry. This is Dr. Carson Beckett. He just moved in with Prof. Dex.”
Carson smiled broadly. “Pleased to meet you, Daniel.”
Daniel waved a hand. “Likewise.”
“My exams are tomorrow, Daniel, and Carson has been helping me practise,” Janet continued. “It’s just that we’re running out of people to examine.”
“People to examine?”
“They’re clinical examinations. I’ve already examined Ronon, and Cam and John. Oh and Vala helped out for a while. But I wanted to have one more run through.”
“And you want to practise on me?”
Janet shrugged. “Do you mind?”
“Well it really depends on what you’re planning on examining.”
“Heart, lungs and abdomen. Well one of them. Carson will tell me once we start.”
Daniel nodded. “Well it makes a nice change from thesis writing. What do you need me to do?”
“You’ll do it, really?”
“Sure.”
“Oh, Daniel thank you so much.”
He smiled. “Don’t speak to soon. I’m fully expecting free medical care in the future.”
Janet got Daniel to lie down on the couch, trying not to wrinkle her nose when she turned up a few mouldy apple cores. “You’ll, need to take off your shirt,” she said awkwardly.
Daniel complied but looked nervous. Previously completely self-assured, Janet suddenly felt nervous herself.
It was strange. She’d examined Ronon, Cam, John and Vala today and Teyla, Liz and Carson the day before. There hadn’t been any tension then. Not even with Ronon, who was, frankly, smoking hot. She felt Carson’s eyes on her and hoped that her face was still smoothly professional. Even though she really didn’t want to look at Daniel, half naked in front of her.
He really did have a rather impressive body for one so geeky.
“Ok. Daniel, Jan and I are going to be talking throughout this. If you could give us some feedback at the end that would be lovely,” Carson said.
“Whatever you need,” Daniel said. Janet noticed that he was avoiding her eyes too.
“Ok,” Carson said. From the tiny lilt in his voice, Janet just knew she would be talking about this later. “Please examine this man’s abdomen.”
Janet took a deep breath. “Ok, so the first thing I need to do is expose the area. Sorry, Daniel, I’m going to need you to undo your belt and lower your pants a bit.”
Daniel looked alarmed. “How far?!”
“Not that far. I just need to see to your pubic bone.”
As Daniel unbuckled his belt Janet kept talking just to cover the awkwardness. “Ok. The abdomen is not distended, and appears to have very good muscle wall tone." Daniel's eyebrows raised, and Janet sped her words up even faster. "There’s a small scar on the right lower quadrant, probably from the removal of an appendix.”
“Is that correct, Daniel?” Carson asked.
“Uh, yeah. Last year actually.”
“Do you have any surgical scars that she hasn’t seen?”
“No that’s it.”
“Ok, Jan. Start examining.”
“Ok, Daniel, I’m going to feel your abdomen now. I’ll start softly, and then more deeply. Do you have any pain in your abdomen at the moment?”
“Should I?”
Janet laughed. “No.”
She crouched down next to the couch, which was lower than a normal examination couch. “Sorry,” she said. “Usually we don’t do this on our knees.” She put her hands on his left upper quadrant and felt him tense. As quickly as she could, she examined his abdomen, reporting normal findings to Carson as she went. Daniel looked more and more uncomfortable as she proceeded.
“Ok,” she said as she finished. “In my opinion, Dr. Beckett, this is a normal abdomen.”
Carson smiled. “That was really good, Jan.”
“Yeah?” She looked at Daniel. “What did you think Daniel?”
Daniel tried to sit up, and was unable to find purchase on the pile of paper he was lying on. “Uh, yeah. Very professional.”
“What normally also forms a part of an abdominal examination?”
“I don’t know. Did I miss something?”
“It’s not routinely performed.”
“Oh, rectal examination.”
Daniel’s eyes widened and he made another futile attempt to sit up. “Seriously?”
Janet couldn’t help laughing. She held out a hand and helped him upright. “I’m not going to do it, Daniel. It was just a question.” Out of the corner of her eye, Janet could see Carson biting his lip to keep himself from laughing.
Daniel looked at the floor. “Can I please put my shirt back on?” he asked plaintively.
“Aye, lad, you can,” Carson said cheerfully. “Jan, you don’t need anymore practise, but do you want to go downstairs and talk about appendicitis?”
“Do you have time for that?”
“For you, love, always.”
“Oh, thank you, Carson.” She looked back to where Daniel was struggling back into his shirt. “And thank you, Daniel.”
Daniel picked up his book again and nodded absently. “Any time.”
Janet and Carson exchanged looks. “I guess we’ll show ourselves out,” Carson said. Daniel didn’t even look up.
Outside the door, Carson took Janet’s arm. “Your place or mine?”
Janet stared at him, still a little distracted by an image of Daniel’s naked abdomen. “Sorry?”
“For the discussion of appendicitis. And your interest in geeky men.”
“Oh shut-up Carson.”
And just when you thought this was enough...I have more to come :S. (I figured that there weren't enough people playing with the doctors!)
