Alex could have cried in happiness at the sight of his best friend's large brown eyes blinking back at him. Finally, after three months of trying not to lose hope, he was back. Jack was awake.

“L-Lex.” The younger man croaked, coughing as the dryness in his throat hit full force. He hadn't spoke for three months, it was a wonder he even had a voice left.

Alex shushed him quickly, “Don't speak, Jack. It's gonna hurt.”

“Wh...” Jack's face scrunched up in concentration as he tried to get the words out, “Lex. Who... a-are these... pe-people?”

Alex's face visibly paled. Jack didn't recognise anyone. Just how bad had he fucked up his friend? He turned to the doctor with a confused expression.

The doctor frowned, “Jack, what do you remember?”

“I... nothing. A-Alex. How d-did... get here?” Jack spoke in broken sentences, the months of disuse taking it's toll on his voice. His voice was barely above a whisper.

“You were in a car accident, Jack. A drunk driver hit your side of the car- it was a miracle you survived. You've been in a coma for three months.” The doctor explained gravely.

Jack's eyes flew wide, “Wh-what?”

“Do you remember anything else, Jack?”

He shook his head slowly; truthfully, he could only remember his name. And Alex. Everything else was stranger to him. He couldn't recognise the other two men in the room. He felt lost. It was a strange feeling to know only his name and one person. He felt as if he was an impostor in somebody else's body.

Suddenly the door burst open, revealing Jack's parents and siblings. The hospital had rang them as soon as Jack had shown signs of waking up; luckily they had already been on their way there. His mother rushed to him, immediately throwing her arms around Jack. She didn't notice the way Jack's body tensed up at the unfamiliar contact.

“My baby! You're okay, thank God. Thank God!” She sobbed, pulling back to cup her son's face with both hands. His eyes widened, a scared expression appearing on his features.

“W-who...are y-you?”

“Mrs. Barakat,” the doctor placed a gentle hand on the emotional woman's shoulder, “We fear that your son may be suffering from a severe case of retrograde amnesia. He can't remember anything but his name and... well, Alex.”

Jack's mother choked out a sob. Her baby didn't remember her. It wasn't fair that he knew Alex, but couldn't remember his own mother. She was the one who had nurtured and raised him, not his best friend. While she was thankful that her son was awake, she couldn't help but feel like someone had played her the wrong cards. Cheated her out of true happiness.

“What? What are you saying?” Jack's father said from beside them, frowning in confusion.

“I'm saying... Jack doesn't recognise anyone right now, he's probably scared and overwhelmed by all the unfamiliarity.”

“But I'm his mother!” Joyce cried, tearing rolling down her cheeks.

“I'm very sorry, Mrs. Barakat. I'll send a nurse in to do Jack's routine check-ups.” The doctor said, before leaving the room.

Alex couldn't say anything. All eyes were on him, and it was making him uncomfortable. It wasn't his fault that Jack couldn't remember anything but him. The look Jack's mother was giving him felt like poison in his veins. If looks could kill, Alex would be six feet under right now.

“This is all your fault!” She screamed, pointing a finger sharply at Alex, “You were in the car with him that night. It's all your fault!”

She was right. Alex knew it was his fault, he had forced Jack to take him out. If he hadn't insisted that Jack drove him to IHOP, this wouldn't have happened. But although he knew this, he couldn't stop the tears burning up in his eyes at her malicious words.

“I'm sorry.” He whispered, before ripping his hand from Jack's grasp and rushing out of the room. He pushed out into the hallway, finding the air stuffy and hard to breathe. The ground seemed to move underneath him, and he swayed as the world spun around him. He sank down against the wall, sliding down it before burying his head between his knees, wrapping his arms around himself. He let out a choked sob, a quiet whimper before he completely broke down, crying loudly. He didn't care who heard him, or if anyone saw.

A pair of arms crept their way around him, pulling him into a tight embrace against a muscled body. Zack. Alex didn't try to push away, only moved closer, clinging to the other man's body.

“Ssh, Lex. She didn't mean it. She's just upset” Zack soothed, rubbing slow circles over Alex's back.

Alex sobbed, “Yes, she did. And she's right- it is my fault.”

“No, Lex, it's not your fault. Never say that! Jack is okay now, he's not dead. He's okay.”

“But he can't remember anything! God, I'll never forgive myself for what I've done- he'll never forgive me!”

Zack frowned at his friend's words, “Alex, Jack doesn't blame you. He's upset right now because you're the only thing he recognises, and you're not there. Rian's in there trying to calm everyone down- you know how he loves to be the peace maker.”

Alex let out a short laugh, “Yeah. I... I don't think I can go back in there, Zack. She hates me.”

“She doesn't hate you, Lex. She's just distraught right now. Everything will be alright.”

Alex shook his head, because how could Zack know that? What if Jack never got his memory back, and he was forever stuck in this state of confusion? Jack's mother would surely hate Alex for that, if she didn't already. He wouldn't blame her.

“Come on, let's go back inside. I promise nothing will happen.” Zack murmured, giving Alex a reassuring smile.

“Promise?” Alex asked uncertainly as the pair stood.

Zack nodded, “I promise. Now come on.”
