Pairing: Jalex (eventually)
Summary: Alex and Jack have been dancing around their feelings for each other for years, but who knew it would literally take the end of the world to bring them together?

Author Notes: Cutesy Jalex is perfect. Yeah, so I'm ill and this is basically all I am doing all day - writing haha.
It's almost sunset by the time they finish setting up camp; there were inflatable mattresses scattered around the room, with sleeping bags balanced on top. It shouldn't have taken that long to get everything ready, but everyone's tired and they can't be bothered to put much effort into it.
“We should take shifts to watch for any zombies,” Rian says as he smooths out a sleeping bag, “That way we won't be taken by surprise if one attacks.”
There's a chorus of murmured agreements around the room at this, everyone thinking the same thing as the short-haired man.
“How about we do the shifts in pairs?” It'll be safer and if one falls asleep the other can wake them up.” Jeff points out, causing everyone to nod.
“Alex and I will pair up.” Jack adds, and he swears he hears someone mumble 'of course you will' under their breath, but he ignores it, knowing that his friends are only teasing.
“You're on first shift then.” Flyzik says, grinning half-heartedly at them. Truth be told, none of them really feel like smiling and being happy at the moment, not giving the current situation and the recent loss of their friend.
And that's how Jack and Alex find themselves sat facing the window in the history room, side by side with weapons in hand. They can't see much out the window because it's night, but it's good enough.
Jack leans over and rests his head on Alex's shoulder, “Hey, Lex?”
Alex hums in response, and Jack continues, “Do you think we'll get out of this alive?” he asks nervously, biting his lip because really, he's terrified that he's going to die. He's even more terrified that his friends are going to die, especially Alex. God, he wouldn't be able to live if Alex was dead.
The older man takes Jack's hand in his, their fingers messily linking together, “Of course we are Jacky, we always make it through. We always survive whatever comes at us, and we're gonna survive this. Okay?”
Jack nods feebly, his hair tickling Alex's neck as he moves, “Okay.”
He's exhausted, the events from today finally taking a toll on his body. He lets out a quiet yawn, snuggling further into the hollow of Alex's throat. It's comforting and familiar, and Jack has a strange feeling of belonging when he's there.
His mind drifts off, thinking of how life used to be before today. Being able to play on stage without really having to care, not taking anything seriously. Everything had changed. He thinks about Alex, his perfectly imperfect best friend. He was Jack's rock, his strong support in a fucked up world.
Jack must have dozed off slightly, because what felt like minutes later Alex was gently shaking him awake, whispering into his ear to 'wake up, Jacky, wake up'. Blinking tiredly, he turns his head towards the voice to see Alex grinning down softly at him, a slight smirk on his face.
“Nice of you to finally join me, sleepy head.” The older teases, causing Jack to pout and poke Alex childishly.
Zack and Evan come over to the pair, both clearly as tired as Jack was. “It's our turn for a shift, bro.” Zack says quietly, placing a hand on Jack's shoulder. The pair nod silently, and Alex stands up, offering a hand to Jack who takes it quickly, pulling himself into a standing position.
They're still holding hands when they find an empty mattress. There's only enough for one between two, so they both climb in eagerly under the sleeping bag cover, desperate for comfort and warmth.
Jack is still shivering, and he jumps slightly when he feels calloused fingers wrap around his wrist, tugging him closer to the body lying next to him. Alex's arms wrap around Jack, who quickly mirrors the other man, wrapping his arms around Alex's waist, tucking his head into Alex's neck like he had done earlier.
“Lex?” He mumbles against the warm skin of Alex's throat, feeling the vibrations of Alex replying against his face.
“We're gonna be alright, yeah?”
“Yeah,” Alex murmurs, only loud enough for Jack to hear, “We're gonna be just fine, I promise.”
