When I was growing up, in a very Baptist church, for some reason I was told that soap operas were, I believe the exact phrasing was, "ungodly" to watch. I'm not quite sure why.. but,it was just that if watched them, they were addicting and "God didn't like them" end of story. Now that I'm older, I think that just out of force of habbit, I just never started to get into them, b/c they were "blech". My parents were in no shape or form christians and my mom was hooked on about 4 or 5 different soap operas, enough to the point where she'd video on one channel, turn the channel to watch one, and then tape a third one upstairs. I remember I told her multiple times that she shouldn't watch them b/c God didn't like it... Oh the innocence of children.
So, today I'm sitting at my kitchen table, eating lunch and watching Charmed on my laptop, and wondering. What really constitutes a drama from being a soap opera or not? Would Charmed and Gilmore Girls be considered soap operas? If not why not? I'm very much addicted to both. Though Charmed more so than GG. I suppose the fact that I OWN the first 4 seasons of Charmed and none of Gilmore Girls and that we don't have TV any more helps that... But why on earth would someone preach against watching "soaps". Sure they're addicting, but it's no more addicting than reading a good novel series. Might it have been that the characters were considered a-morale? There was domestic violence? the series didn't appeal to God b/c none of them took God seriously? Then again, how many soaps have a "godly theme"?
Which brings up another good question... Should christians subjugate themselves solely to christian material? Why should we live in a box where only God and yourself and other christians exist? I know I'm
really not one to talk about it, but I see so many of my old friends that I used to be really close to who are still stuck in the 'box'. And probably never will make it out. There's just so much more to life than having to worry over every detail being pleasing to God. I don't think that he would want us to do that. Nor would he want us to ignore the world around us b/c we deem it to be not "of god". Didn't he say we should be IN the world but not OF it?
I really need to read my bible more often again.
And here I'll stop.
